Stacie Smith

Former Gardner-Webb standout Stacie (Reichert) Smith returned toBoiling Springs, N.C. as an assistant coach on Tom Cole's staff inAugust 2007 and is now in her seventh year as the pitching coachfor the Runnin' Bulldog softball team in 2013-14.

Along with her duties as the pitching coach, Smith also helpswith day-to-day operations, travel, practices and recruiting.

During her time at Gardner-Webb, Smith has guided a handful ofpitchers to All-State, All-Conference and All-Tournament honorees,while also helping them to set new GWU Division I pitchingfeats.

Smith saw five-year hurler Cindy Boomhower battle through a backinjury to earn Big South All-Conference honors twice (2012 &2010), while also picking up NCCSIA All-State recognition in 2012.Boomhower was also named to the Big South Softball ChampionshipAll-Tournament Team in both 2012 and 2011, while fellowRunnin’ Bulldog pitcher Christine Murray was named to the2009 Big South All-Tournament Team.

Since 2009, GWU’s first year in the Big South Conference,the Runnin’ Bulldogs have had pitchers earn Big South Pitcherof the Week honors on eight different occasions and at least oncein each season.

Under Smith’s tutelage, pitchers Boomhower (36 wins),Taryn Beck (35 wins) and Murray (31 wins) have climbed into thetop-five in GWU’s Division I career record books in wins,while the trio, along with Jessica Childers, are also in thetop-five in complete games.

Murray (471), Beck (413), Boomhower (372) and Childers (258) allare in the top-five in GWU’s DI history in career strikeouts,behind the career leader in strikeouts Reichert (Smith) with 538,while both Murray (7.47) and Beck (6.04) are in the top-two instrikeouts per 7.0 innings pitched in GWU’s DI career recordbooks.

The threesome of Beck (14), Boomhower (8) and Murray (8) arealso in the top-three in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ DIcareer record books in shutouts.

In 2012, Boomhower’s 13 victories put her in a tie forthird overall for the most wins in a single season in GWU’sDivision I history, while her team-high four saves tied her withBeck, who also had four saves under Smith’s guidance in 2008,for the most saves by a pitcher in a single season in GWU’sDI record books.

Murray holds the top-three single season records in strikeoutsper 7.0 innings pitched (2008, 2009, 2010), while her 193strikeouts in the 2009 season ranks as the second most for a GWUhurler in a GWU’s DI single-season history.

Smith, formerly Reichert, who topped multiple single-season andcareer categories for the Runnin' Bulldogs during her playing days,returned to Gardner-Webb after coaching at Frostburg State from2005-07.

White at GWU, Smith etched her name in multiple categoriesthroughout her career. Upon graduating, she was the single-seasonleader in wins, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERAand shutouts. She topped the school's record book for career wins,saves, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts perseven innings, ERA and shutouts.

During her freshman season, she recorded a team-best 69strikeouts while tallying a 2.36 ERA. Reichert led the team in winsher sophomore campaign while amassing an impressive 2.12 ERA in 28appearances. She earned Second-Team All-Conference honors herjunior year and was named to the North Carolina Collegiate SportsInformation Association All-State Team. Reichert posted 18 wins andled the A-Sun with a school-record 213 strikeouts. She also tosseda career-best 1.71 ERA. Reichert finished her career in 2005 byposting 166 strikeouts in 183 innings with a 2.33 ERA.

She received her Master's degree from Frostburg State in May2007 in Human Performance and her Bachelor’s degree inBiology with a minor in Chemistry from Gardner-Webb in 2005.

Smith, who married Tyler Smith in the summer of 2012, is also aprofessor in the Biology department at Gardner-Webb University.
