Lauren Sams

Sams was officially added to the Gardner-Webb coaching staff in October of 2022 as an assistant coach. She served as a captain during the 2022 seasons during her final season in Boiling Springs.

She was a student-athlete for the Runnin' Bulldogs from 2018-22, Sams played in 65 career games and made 53 starts, including all 19 games during her final season that saw Gardner-Webb win 10 games and advance to the Big South Championship Semifinals for the first time in team history.

A native of Falls Church, Virginia, Sams broke the school record for single season assists (29) and ranks second all-time in assists (58). She is fifth all-time in points (120) and is sixth in goals (62). This past spring was her best season to date as she set career highs in every major statistical category with goals (26), assists (29), points (55), groundballs (32), caused turnovers (9), and draw controls (46).

Sams set her career high in goals on her senior day (4/23) against Longwood converting four shots into goals in the program's first-ever win over the Lancers. She dished a trio of assists in the team's 15-14 victory over #4 Campbell in the First Round of the Big South Tournament, including the game-winning assist to Jada Preston with twenty seconds remaining to seal the program's first postseason win.

She also is fifth in single season points (55 in 2022), sixth in career groundballs (87), ninth in career draw controls (69), tenth in single season draws (46 in 2022).

Sams, who attended George C. Marshall High School in Virginia, majored in exercise science at Gardner-Webb and graduated from GWU in May 2022.
