Gladhill's Superb Play Isn't Enough In 6-2 Loss To Kennesaw State
October 27, 2007 | Women's Soccer
KENNESAW, Ga. Despite two goals by senior Lindsey Gladhill, the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team was unable stop a second-half surge by the homestanding Kennesaw State Owls Saturday evening, falling by a 6-2 margin.
Head coach Kevin Mounce's team falls to 6-11-0 on the year and 4-6-0 in the Atlantic Sun. The Owls improve to 14-3 overall and 9-1-0 in league competition.
Gladhill tallied her first of two goals of the night in the 54th minute, tying the contest at 1-1. On the play, junior Angie Harvey took a free kick from the left side of the pitch and found Gladhill amongst a few players. Gladhill promptly played the ball past KSU netminder Katie Piotrowski.
Just two minutes prior to Gladhill's goal, the Owls struck first as Annie Phillips netted her first of three scores. Maylee Attin-Johnson was credited with an assist.
The match would not stay tied for long, as KSU would strike for five consecutive goals over the next 16 minutes to put the match out of reach.
At the 56:24 mark, Caitlin Dingle split some defenders from the right-center of the pitch, just above the top of the box, and played a beautifully struck ball to the lower left corner of the goal for the 2-1 lead.
Phillips, despite scoring a goal at the 53:07 mark, was not done. In the 62nd minute, she struck again. Attin-Johnson connected with Phillips for a breakaway goal through the GWU defense, for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
After the restart, the Owls obtained the possession quickly. This time, Beth Meadors connected with Phillips for the hat trick on the breakaway score.
KSU would tack on a goal five minutes later after a foul in the box. Sara Clapham netted the penalty kick for a 5-1 lead. In the 73rd minute, Attin-Johnson was spotted by Clapham in the left side of the box and fired a shot across the goal to the lower right of the net for the 6-1 advantage.
GWU didn't give up, though. Sophomore Samantha Cawkell blasted a shot toward the goal, but the shot came out into the box in the 82nd minute. From there, Gladhill cleaned up the shot with her second score of the night. Cawkell was credited with the assist.
The Bulldogs were unable to slice into the lead, falling by the 6-2 score.
For the match, KSU out-shot the visitors by a 22-10 margin. The Owls tallied four corner kicks to just two for GWU.
Sarah Wyszynski tallied eight saves in the match while Piotrowski stopped two shots on frame.
GWU was whistled for 12 fouls while KSU had just six.
The Bulldogs can still reach the conference tournament though. However, they need some help along the way. GWU will hope for the best and try to get back on track on Wednesday, Oct. 31 when it hosts its last home match of the year at 7 p.m., against A-Sun rival Campbell.
