
Bulldogs Continue Hot Streak; Women Down Wildcats But Men Fall To CCSA Foe

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's swim team continued its early season domination of competition, downing conference foe Davidson by a score of 121.5-83.5. However, despite its best effort, the GWU men fell to the Wildcats by a 120-82 margin.
The women improve to 9-0 on the season and 7-0 in CCSA action. The men fall to 3-3 on the year and 3-2 in conference competition.
The 200 medley relay team of Whitney Hooley, Stepheni Stadnik, Rachel Warkentin and Corey Hughey got things started off quickly, establishing the fifth-best mark in school history with a first-place time of 1:49.19.
GWU extended its lead after the first race while Heather Roka and Elizabeth Ketterer finished one-two in the 1,000 free. Roka touched the wall in 10:27.33 while Ketterer posted a time of 10:31.72.
Ketterer wasn't satisfied with her second place performance and she proved herself in the very next race. In the 200 free, Ketterer won the event in a time 1:56.55. Kelly Gueltig took fourth in the race while Grace Whiteside placed fifth.
Corey Hughey and Rachel Warkentin took second and third, respectively, in the 50 free. Hughey finished in 24.67 while Warkentin completed the race in 25.33.
In the 400 IM, Roka was second while Sarah Steadman placed third. Roka had a time of 4:43.89. Steadman was third in 4:45.54.
Warkentin not only won the 100 fly, but also garnered the top fifth-best mark in school history with a time of 59.14. Hooley took the 100 back title with a time of 59.79. Steadman was second in the event with a time of 1:00.94.
Roka wasn't done with her winning ways, as she returned to the victors' circle with the 500 free championship. Roka finished the event in a time of 5:09.95. Ketterer wasn't too far behind, touching the wall in 5:11.66.
Stadnik, who earlier in the meet had been a part of the 200 medley relay team champions, won her second event of the night with a time of 1:09.39 in the 100 breast. The time was not only a personal best, but also the 10th-best time in school history.
On the men's side, the quartet of Kyle Hooley, Patrick Elerding, Denaj Seymour and George Partin accounted for a school record in the 200 medley relay. The Bulldogs finished in a time of 1:37.62 for the event.
Adam Suggs, who had a standout performance in the 1,650 free against the College of Charleston the last time GWU was at home, put on another strong performance for head coach Mike Simpson's team, finishing with a school-record time of 10:09.05. He placed third in the event.
Seymour posted a winning mark of 22.71 in the 50 free while Elerding's time of 23.00 was good enough for the third-fastest time in school history.
Steven Caudill, who had a superb high school career, continued his strong efforts in the pool as he took home the 400 IM title in 4:17.02, besting the school record by nearly five seconds.
In the 500 free, Abram Miller's third-place time of 5:00.89 was good enough to shatter the school record by two seconds. Suggs came in a close fourth in the event, touching the wall in 5:01.02.
Craig South was just off his school-record time in the 100 breast. He won the event with a time of 1:02.02 while Casey Brutus a personal best after finishing in 1:03.52.
George Partin was just off the 200 free time of Merritt Peele as he garnered a time of 1:46.21 for second place.
The 200 free relay team of Elerding, Caudill, South and Adam Middleton narrowly escaped with a school record with their second-place effort. The quartet had a time of 1:31.19 for the event.
GWU returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m., as the teams travel to
nearby Wingate. The Bulldogs will battle with the host Bulldogs,
along with Catawba.
