ATLANTA Gardner-Webb's Ryan Gates' 44-yard field goal try
with three seconds left was tipped by Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan
at the line, knocking the kick offline to end an upset bid by the
Runnin' Bulldogs, 10-7.
Gardner-Webb (2-4) had a chance to go ahead in the end zone with
nine seconds left, but Devin Campbell's throw to Jamal Patmon was
just out of reach, and GWU decided to attempt a tying field goal on
third down. Campbell had passed the Dogs down to Tech's
26-yard line by going 2-for-3 for 38 yards in the drive.
Gardner-Webb stuffed Tech's vaunted rushing attack all afternoon,
limiting what had been the Bowl Subdivision's fifth-best rushing
attack (290.2 yards per game) to just 79 yards on 47 carries
the sixth time this season that GWU has held an opposing offense
under 100 yards rushing, which extends a Big South Conference
record.
Georgia Tech (5-1) managed just 199 yards of total offense, as
reserve quarterback Calvin Booker struggled passing against a stout
GWU pass defense as well, which benefited from solid pressure (10
tackles for loss) up front. Junior end Leon Hudson had six solo
stops and 3.0 tackles for loss to pace that effort, and helped
Quinnon Isom, Kenny Baker and Kyle Hill keep Booker under duress
all day.
Georgia Tech's lone touchdown came on a broken play, as Booker
scrambled and hit Jonathan Dyer on a two-yard dump pass. Dyer found
daylight, and after a GWU linebacker was tripped inadvertently by
the game's umpire, Dyer got to the sideline and went 79 yards to
pay dirt. The Jackets' got a break on a GWU fake punt that was
stopped in Bulldog territory, but the Gardner-Webb defense stepped
up to hold Tech to a field goal and the score was 10-0 at
halftime.
Gardner-Webb caught a break midway through the third quarter after
some sensational defense. Campbell, who entered just before
halftime after starter Stan Doolittle was nicked up, marched the
Dogs down into field goal range. A personal foul penalty on a
field goal try gave GWU a first down inside the Georgia Tech 10,
and Brandon Jackson beat the Jacket defense to the pylon on an
eight-yard run with 7:45 left in the third.
The Runnin' Bulldogs out-gained Georgia Tech 62-15 in the fourth
quarter, driving into Tech territory twice, but could not get back
on the scoreboard.
Gardner-Webb finished with 227 yards of total offense against the
FBS' 15th-ranked defense, with 74 yards on the ground and 153
through the air. Campbell came off the bench to complete 10-of-13
passes for 116 yards, with seven of those balls going to emerging
NFL prospect Dobson Collins for 97 yards. Atlanta native Philip
Peoples rushed for 53 yards on 17 carries to pace the rushing
attack.
Dami Teniola finished with nine stops from his middle linebacker
spot to lead the Bulldog defense.
The Atlantic Coast Conference's leading rusher, Jonathan Dwyer, was
held to 27 yards on 16 carries. Calvin Booker led Georgia Tech with
35 yards on the ground (19 carries), but was just 3-of-11 passing
for 120 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Defensive end stars Morgan and Michael Johnson each had 10 tackles
and combined for 8.5 tackles behind the line and four sacks.
Johnson, a 6-foot-7, 260-pounder, is projected as an early first
rounder in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Gardner-Webb must now turn its attention to Presbyterian, which
invades Spangler Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 18) at 6 pm ET.
