Gardner-Webb Heads North To Face Red-Hot Stony Brook In Big South Matchup
October 30, 2008 | Football
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Gardner-Webb will travel to Long
Island, New York, to face red-hot Stony Brook on Saturday, Nov. 1,
at 3 pm ET in a key Big South Conference matchup.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (4-4, 1-1 Big South Conference) have rebounded
to win two games in a row, and have done so with a high-powered
offense that has posted averages of 40.7 points and 485.0 yards per
game in those two wins.
The methodology of each of those victories was decidedly
different.
Against Presbyterian, the Dogs rushed for 321 yards and had
514 total yards in an easy 47-21 win. Against VMI, GWU passed for
392 yards en route to a 34-27 victory that saw the Dogs amass
456 total yards.
One constant in both wins has been the redshirt senior quarterback
Devin Campbell (6-4, 196), who re-emerged as a starter following an
injury to junior Stan Doolittle just before halftime at Georgia
Tech. In the past two starts, Campbell has completed 45-of-66
passes (68.2 percent) for 585 yards, five touchdowns and no
interceptions, and has rushed for 22 more yards en route to an
average of 303.5 yards of individual total offense in that
stretch.
GWU will face a Stony Brook team that is also on a roll, having won
two Big South games on a row taking a 20-19 win over
Charleston Southern at home on Oct. 18, and traveling to Conway,
S.C., to capture a 28-24 win over three-time league champion
Coastal Carolina last weekend.
The Seawolves have proven to be a very physical, athletic team on
both sides of the football, and will present Gardner-Webb with
perhaps their most imposing physical challenge of the season to
date. Stony Brook ranks third in the Big South in total defense,
and is stocked with impressive size in the front seven and the
secondary.
Offensively, a bruising running game paced by talented backs
Conte Cuttino (5-8, 200) and Edwin Gowins (5-11, 230) is
complimented by a steadily improving air attack that features
quarterback Dayne Hoffman (6-2, 225) and veteran receivers Lynell
Suggs (6-2, 190) and Dwayne Eley (5-10, 180). Hoffman, a redshirt
freshman, has gone 10 quarters in a row without throwing an
interception and connected with Eley on a key 61-yard
touchdown play in the win over Coastal Carolina.
Kickoff is set for 3 pm ET in Stony Brook's LaVelle Stadium on
Saturday. The game will be carried live on WGWG-FM (88.3). A video
stream is available on a pay-per-view basis through the Big South's
Edge.
