Bulldogs Go Through Weekend Undefeated

WASHINGTON, D.C.
– The Gardner-Webb women's swim team knocked off American,
Howard and North Carolina A&T this weekend while in the
nation's capital.
The Bulldogs defeated American 165-123 Friday evening before
knocking off Howard 64-31 and North Carolina A&T 73-22 Saturday
afternoon.
Against American, the Bulldogs started the meet by taking the 200
medley relay title in the third-fastest time in GWU history. Corey
Hughey, Stepheni Stadnik, Rachel Warkentin and Veronica Case
combined to touch the wall in 1:48.62.
Elizabeth Ketterer then won the 1,000 free in a solid time of 10:48.02 while teammate Kelly Gueltig was just behind her after finishing in 10:51.06.
Ketterer won the next event, the 200 free. Ketterer's time of
1:55.21 was just ahead of third-place finisher Rachel Warkentin,
whose time of 1:56.62 was the seventh-fastest in school
history.
Hughey continued the Red and Black's winning ways by finishing in a time of 59.81 in the 100 back. GWU actually took the top four spots of the event. Victoria Bryant's time of 1:00.19 was good enough for second in addition to being the sixth-best time in school history. Sarah Steadman was just behind her (1:02.06) while Kristen Sellers was fourth (1:03.30).
Although GWU didn't win the 100 breast, newcomer Veronica Case's
time of 1:08.21 was the seventh-fastest time in school history. The
time was also good enough for a silver medal.
Fellow rookie Lyndsey Roka's time of 2:10.92 in the 200 fly established her as the sixth-fastest swimmer in that event in GWU history. Roka's time was good enough for second place.
In the 50 free, Hughey won in a time of 24.28. Case, who took third in 25.02, posted the 10th-best time in GWU history. Hughey also earned the silver in the 100 free (53.77).
Bryant then got GWU back into the win column by posting a top-10 time in school history in the 200 back. Bryant took the event title in 2:09.09 while Sarah Steadman was third.
Two events later, Ketterer won the 500 free in 5:10.04. Gueltig was just behind her, finishing second in 5:16.18. Warkentin, a sophomore, then garnered first in the 100 fly in 58.16. Case's time of 1:00.28 was good enough for third in addition to being the 10th-fastest time on GWU's list.
Freshman Kiah Bellows won the 400 IM in 4:40.53 while Bryant (4:41.78), Steadman (4:45.42) and Roka (4:46.46) went two, three and four, respectively.
Against Howard and North Carolina A&T, the
200 medley relay team took first in 1:55.18 to get things
going.
Rachel Glenn followed it up with a win in the 1,000 free in 11:18.41 while Hughey was second in 11:30.78. GWU's Hillary Leonard posted a winning time of 2:02.79 in the 200 free, barely besting Bellows' time of 2:02.87. Kali Fletcher was third in 2:03.60.
Mallory Baxter narrowly missed a first-place ribbon in the 200 IM, finishing second in 2:20.53. Hughey was third in 2:20.90.
Kibler took home the 100 fly title in a solid
time of 1:02.22. In the next event, Case posted the
10th-fastest time in school history in the 100 free,
touching in 54.53.
Mallory Blessing posted a top time of 5:36.78 in the 500 free. Then, Sarah Stokes won the 100 breast in 1:12.41, wrapping up the individual events for GWU.
The Bulldogs return to action Nov. 14 against Georgia Southern in
Boiling Springs, N.C., at 6 p.m.
