Pirates Take Down Bulldogs, 2-0
September 18, 2008 | Women's Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team was unable to continue its winning ways Thursday afternoon, falling by a 2-0 count to East Carolina in Greenville, N.C., in a non-conference match-up.
The Bulldogs fall to 2-6 on the season while the Pirates improve to
5-2 in front of 313 fans.
Two first-half scores by ECU were too much for GWU to overcome
despite a solid defensive effort.
Between the pipes, senior Sarah Wyszynski tallied her third
consecutive start and made seven saves on nine shots on goal.
Wyszynski was kept on her toes as the Pirates fired off 12 shots
for the match, seven of which came in the first 45 minutes of
play.
In the seventh minute, Blair Heffner found Amanda Malkiewicz from
the left side of the pitch in the box and she was able to rocket a
shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Despite the Bulldogs'
pressure, ECU was able to maintain control of the first half of
play.
At the 26:40 mark, Jessica Cunningham added an insurance goal as
she sent the ball past the Bulldogs' defense for her first goal of
the year. Malkiewicz found Leah Bagonis, who promptly played the
ball to Cunningham cutting through the defense. Cunningham was then
able to put a slight touch on it to get it past Wyszynski for the
2-0 advantage that was more than enough for the home squad.
For the Red and Black, Bailey Stevens fired off two of the
Bulldogs' five shots. Stevens, Stephanie Benshoof, Megan Reimer and
Lauren Kelly all recorded one shot on goal in the loss.
For the match, ECU tallied 12 shots to GWU's five. Nine shots for
the home squad were on frame compared to four by the Bulldogs. The
Pirates notched five corner kicks to one for GWU. Each team was
whistled for six fouls.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday at 11 a.m., when they travel
to Charleston Southern for their first Big South Conference
match-up.
