Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will again have a busy slate this week, as the Bulldogs will take on Utah Valley on Thursday night, November 19th, in Greensboro, N.C. and then will turn around to compete in the N.C. State Open on Saturday, November 21st, in Raleigh, N.C.
The weekend of November 14-15 was a tough weekend for the Bulldogs,
as GWU squared off in four different dual matches, against four
different teams in two days. GWU opened up the weekend with a 47-0
loss at Chattanooga on Saturday morning, then traveled to Chapel
Hill, N.C. on Sunday to compete in the 2009 ACC Challenge. There
the Bulldogs fell to North Carolina, No. 20 Virginia and Virginia
Tech. On the weekend the Bulldogs battled one nationally ranked
team in No. 20 Virginia and nine nationally ranked grapplers in
their respective weight classes.
A two-point takedown in overtime for redshirt-freshman Travis
Porter in his bout against Virginia Tech's Tim Miller highlighted
the Bulldogs performances at the 2009 ACC Challenges on November
15th. Porter, who competed at 197 in that match, picked up the
lone Bulldog win at the ACC Challenge.
The Utah Valley Wolverines entered the season tied with Gardner-Webb ranked No. 52 as a team nationally by the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine 2009-10 Preseason Division I Tournament Power Index. The Wolverines had seven wrestlers place in the top-three at the Cowboy Open last weekend, the first and only action on the year for the Wolverines thus far this season. The Wolverines Benjamin Kjar is ranked No. 11 nationally at 125-pounds by Intermat and comes into the Thursday night with a 2-1 record, having fallen in the championship match to No. 17 ranked Michael Martinez from Wyoming in overtime. At 133, Jeffrey Newby posted a 3-1 record, while at 174 Brad Darrington also posted a 3-1 record, as both finished in second-place at the Cowboy Open for their weight class.
Thursday night's dual match with the Wolverines will start at 5:30
p.m. in Greensboro, N.C. at UNC-Greensboro.
The 2009 NC State Open will be held Saturday, November 21 at
Reynolds Coliseum.
