CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte 49ers put six players in double figures Saturday afternoon, and raced to a 95-66 win over Gardner-Webb at Halton Arena.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Runnin' Bulldogs (3-4).
The 49ers (8-1) scored a pair of late baskets just before halftime to lead 50-36 at the break, after Gardner-Webb had scored six unanswered points to pull within 12 moments earlier.
Gardner-Webb fell behind by 22 early in the second half, and was not able to recover - shooting just 31.4 percent after the break (11-of-35) and making just 3-of-14 shots from long distance in the second half.
Charlotte used a considerable size advantage to score 56 of its points in the paint, paced by Boston College transfer Shamari Spears (13 points) and freshmen
Chris Braswell (11 points) and K.J. Sherrill (10 points). An'Juan Wilderness came off the bench to score 10 points as well, helping the 49ers shoot 53.7 percent for the game.
Dijuan Harris (13 points) and Shamarr Bowden (10 points) also scored in double digits for the hosts.
Gardner-Webb got a team-high 13 points from Charlotte native C.J. Hailey, but saw the starting backcourt of Grayson Flittner and Brian McNair go a combined 0-for-10 from the floor with no points. Auryn MacMillan and Jonathan Moore each scored eight, and David Brown hit a trio of late three-pointers to finish with nine for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
GWU was able to cut down on its turnover numbers, committing just 15 after posting 75 combined in its previous three losses.
Things do not get easier for Gardner-Webb, with a trip to nationally-ranked Duke looming on Tuesday, December 15 in Durham. The 7:00 contest will be televised live by ESPN2, with Mike Patrick and Len Elmore providing the call.
