GWU Drops 104-57 Decision At Penn State
December 20, 2009 | Men's Basketball
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Gardner-Webb senior Anton Silver came off
the bench to score a career-high 26 points, but Penn State jumped
out early and cruised to a 104-57 win Saturday night.
Silver hit 9-of-12 shots, including 6-of-8 from three-point range
for his 26 points - scoring that total in just 23 minutes of
action. The production was one of few bright spots for the Runnin'
Bulldogs (3-7) in the snowy Keystone State, as they dropped their
seventh game in a row.
Penn State (7-4) went on a 30-4 run to start the game, and led
41-10 when Silver entered the game with 4:06 remaining in the
opening half. Silver scored eight points after the half's final
media timeout to help trim the Nittany Lions' lead to 44-24 at the
break.
Penn State had little trouble the rest of the way, putting six
players in double digits.
Guards Talor Battle (21 points) and Tim Frazier (18 points) led the
way. Bill Edwards (13), Chris Babb (12), Andrew Ott (12) and Andrew
Jones (11) also helping the cause offensively.
Led by Jones and Ott, Penn State outscored Gardner-Webb 36-2 in the
paint and had 10 second-chance points.
Gardner-Webb shot 35.2 percent for the game overall, but did show
improvement in its three-point shooting - going 12-of-29 from that
distance (41.4 percent). Penn State was an efficient 32-of-60 for
the game (53.3 percent) and held a 45-24 edge on the backboards.
The Nittany Lions also scored 33 points off of 20 GWU
turnovers.
In addition to Silver's 26 points, Gardner-Webb got 11 points from
C.J. Hailey.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action in 10 days, as they
travel to face 2nd-ranked Texas on December 29 in Austin (Fox
Sports Southwest).
