Clemson, S.C. The Gardner-Webb men and
women's indoor track and field teams were at Clemson University
this weekend, where the Bulldogs participated in the Tiger Paw
Invitational, competing against over 20 schools from around the
Southeast.
The strong performances by the Bulldogs this weekend were
highlighted by sophomore Jason Wenzel's fourth-place finish in the
800 meter run, senior Caryn Daane's sixth-place finish in the
women's shot put event and junior Paul Steinke's nine-place finish
in the 400 meter dash.
Wenzel took fourth-place in the 800 meter run, crossing the line in
a new personal best time of 1:55.36, while Daane took sixth-place
with a toss of 12.64 meters in the shot put, a new personal best.
Steinke's ninth-place finish in the 400 meter dash gave him a new
personal best time of 50.56 for the event on Friday evening.
On the women's side, the Bulldogs had five top-20 finishes on the
weekend, highlighted by seniors Daane, Beth Long and Victoria
Argus. Long finished 14th overall in the 800 meter run on Friday
night with a new personal record time of 2:22.49. Argus had two
top-15 finishes on the weekend, as she took 15th place in both the
60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.29 and in the long jump event,
turning in a jump of 5.19 meters.
Daane also had a strong showing in the women's weight throw event,
as she turned in a long throw of 13.29 m, good enough to place her
in18th-place overall.
Other notable performances include senior Dina Nshisso setting a
new personal best in the 400 meter dash with her time of 1:05.97,
while freshman Elisabeth Sawyer set a new personal record in the
800 meter run with her time of 2:29.97.
For the GWU men had ten top-20 finishes, including Wenzel's and
Steinke's top-10 finishes over the two-day event.
In the men's pole vault, sophomore Adam Reed finished ninth
overall, clearing the bar at 4.39 meters.
Sophomore Johnathan Rucker had two top-20 finishes on Friday night,
as Rucker took 11th-place in the 60 meter hurdles, crossing the
finish line with a time of 8.48, a new personal best. Rucker also
took 20th-place in the men's long jump event, turning in a leap of
6.14 meters.
In the 800 meter run, red-shirt junior Charlie Steinke took 14th
overall with his time of 1:58.75.
Freshman thrower Mike McPherson had a strong showing in the men's
shot put event on Saturday afternoon, as he turned in a long throw
of 12.99 meters, good enough to place him in 16th-place
overall.
Two Bulldogs crossed the line simultaneously in the 60 meter
hurdles event on Friday, as Daniel Mobley and Evan Brusich both
finished in a tie for 19th-place, each crossing the finish line
with a time of 8.75. The time was a personal best for both Brusich
and Mobley.
GWU had another top-20 showing in the weight throw event, as
red-shirt freshman Christoph Hutschalik took 19th-place with his
long throw of 14.42 meters.
In other track news, senior Jake Didion competed in the 2009 Tyson
Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville,
AR on Saturday afternoon. Didion finished in 18th-place overall in
the men's triple jump event, turning in a jump of 13.58 meters.
The GWU Indoor Track and Field teams will return to action on
February 26-27 when the Bulldogs will co-host the Big South
Championships with High Point University at Clemson University's
indoor facility in Clemson, S.C.
