March 02, 2009 | Men's Basketball
CHARLOTTE Gardner-Webb senior Aaron Linn was named Big
South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's basketball,
in addition to garnering second-team All-Big South honors.
Forward Josh Henley (Madison, Tenn. / Hunters Lane HS) earned
All-Freshman Team recognition as well from the league's head
coaches and media.
Linn (Lenexa, Kan. / Johnson County CC) was joined on the
second-team All-Big South squad by Seth Curry (Liberty), Reid Augst
(UNC Asheville), Al'Lonzo Coleman (Presbyterian) and Travis Holmes
(VMI).
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound guard averaged a team-high 14.7 points to
go with 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game for the
Runnin' Bulldogs. He notched double figures scoring in 16 of his
last 19 games and finished with a solid six assists and only one
turnover on Senior Night (2/28).
Academically, Linn carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point
average in his chosen major of finance. For his career, Linn
averaged 13.6 points per game in 60 games played for the Runnin'
Bulldogs.
Henley, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound rebounding dynamo, was named Big
South Freshman of the Week for the third time on Sunday afternoon,
and garnered All-Freshman Team honors for his season's worth of
work in the paint.
Despite playing as an undersized power forward, Henley finished
third in the league with 10.4 rebounds per game (11.1 rpg in
Conference play) and set new Big South Conference freshman
single-season records for total rebounds (302) and rebounds per
game (10.4). Henley pulled down at least 10 rebounds in 17 games,
and had seven games with at least 15 boards.
Four of his games were double-doubles, as Henley averaged 6.6
points per game on the season. His most impressive game came at
3rd-ranked Oklahoma (Nov. 22), when he scored 15 points and hauled
down 12 boards against the Sooners.
Henley leads the nation's freshman this season in rebounding as
well.
Gardner-Webb (13-16, 9-9 Big South) finished the regular season
tied for fifth, and will tangle as the No. 6 seed against No. 3
Liberty on Tuesday night at 7 pm ET in Lynchburg, Va. a
quarterfinals matchup in the 2009 Advance Auto Parts Big South
