September 14, 2009 | Football
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Quarterback Stan Doolittle was named Choice
Hotels Offensive Player of the Week and linebacker Marty Patterson
was named Defensive Player of the Week Monday morning by the Big
South Conference office.
Doolittle (Ninety Six, S.C. / Ninety Six HS) keyed a big lead for
Gardner-Webb early, and led a clutch, game-winning drive late in
the fourth quarter after the Catamounts had clawed their way
back.
The 6-foot-3, 224-pound senior completed 23-of-40 passes for 265
yards and a touchdown, and carried the football 12 times for 30
yards and a touchdown to account for 295 of Gardner-Webb's 349
yards of total offense in the game (84.5 percent).
With the score tied, and 6:18 left in the game, Doolittle found his
offense just outside the Western Carolina 20-yard line. He
delivered a masterful, 12-play, 79-yard drive that culminated with
a one-yard quarterback sneak that gave Gardner-Webb the lead back
for good with 2:02 remaining. The drive chewed just over four
valuable minutes off the game clock, leaving the Catamounts little
time for an answer.
On the decisive drive, Doolittle was an efficient 4-of-6 for 56
yards - with three of his four completions going for first downs,
including an 11-yard connection with Philip Peoples on 3rd-and-6 at
the Catamounts' 34-yard line.
Doolittle led Gardner-Webb on a 10-play, 63-yard scoring drive to
open the game, going 4-for-4 for 36 yards and a nine-yard touchdown
strike to Tyson Petty. Doolittle also ran twice for 18 yards in
that drive, which was the first blow in what would grow to a 20-0
lead for Gardner-Webb in the third quarter.
Doolittle is 39-of-63 for 512 yards and three touchdowns on the
season and has rushed for 58 yards. He leads the Big South
Conference in passing average (256.0 ypg), total offense (285.0
ypg), pass efficiency (142.70 rating), yards per completion (13.1
ypc), yards per attempt (8.1 ypa), passing touchdowns (3),
completions (39) and attempts (63).
For his career, Doolittle ranks ninth in Gardner-Webb history with
3,434 yards passing (330-of-537) and 20 touchdowns. He remains the
school's career leader in pass completion percentage (61.5 %).
Patterson (Mt. Airy, Ga. / Habersham Central HS) spearheaded
another solid effort by the Gardner-Webb defense, helping the 'Dogs
hold Western Carolina to just 43 rushing yards on 25 carries.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior led the squad with seven tackles
(six solo), 2.0 tackles for loss (minus-6 yards) and a sack. He
also had a pair of quarterback pressures in the game.
Patterson's efforts helped Gardner-Webb force three turnovers as a
team, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs nine takeaways in two games so
far in 2009. The defensive effort on the ground marked the ninth
time in the past 13 games that GWU has held its opposition to less
than 100 yards on the ground.
Patterson leads Gardner-Webb's balanced defense this season with 13
total tackles (nine solo), and paces the Big South Conference with
2.0 quarterback sacks. He also has 3.0 tackles for loss in two
games. Since moving into the starting lineup last season in the
second week, Patterson has registered 94 total hits.
The Runnin' Bulldogs rank No. 4 nationally after two weeks in
tackles for loss per game (10.0), registering nine hits behind the
line at Western Carolina, and 11 in the opener vs. Mars Hill.
Gardner-Webb (2-0) will hit the road again this week, traveling to
face NC State at 6 pm ET on Saturday, September 19, in Raleigh. The
meeting will be Gardner-Webb's second ever with an Atlantic Coast
Conference school, with the first coming in a 10-7 loss at Georgia
Tech last October 11 in Atlanta.
