
Lady Bulldogs Earn Third Place Finish at CCSA Championships

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Gardner-Webb women's swimming team wrapped up the 2009-10 season this week at the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships, where the Lady Bulldogs finished third overall with 516.5 points, behind conference champion Florida Gulf Coast University and Davidson College.
Gardner-Webb set new CCSA records during the three-day meet. In the 400 yard medley relay, the team of Corey Hughey, Kim Zachensky, Rachel Warkentin and Elizabeth Charter finished with a time of 3:42.32 to set the new mark, and Kim Zachensky set the new records in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.25 in the preliminaries, and the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.38.
Kim Zachensky was honored after winning the 200 yard IM, 100 yard breaststroke and 200 yard breaststroke, and being part of the winning 200 yard medley relay team, setting new conference records in the latter three events, as the 2010 CCSA Women's Most Outstanding Freshman Performer.
Thursday evening, in the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Elizabeth Charter, Sarah Steadman, Kristen Sellers, and Corey Hughey finished in second overall, timing in at 1:34.16. In the 500 yard freestyle, Elizabeth Ketterer timed in at eighth place with a time of 5:05.39. In the 200 yard IM, Rachel Warkentin placed in third overall with a time of 2:04.89.
In the 50 yard freestyle, Corey Hughey placed in second with a time of 22.96 and Elizabeth Charter finished in fourth with a time of 23.07. The Lady Bulldogs timed in first in the 400 yard medley relay, with the team of Corey Hughey, Kim Zachensky, Rachel Warkentin, and Elizabeth Charter timing in at 3:42.32, setting a new CCSA record.
Friday night, the action began with the 200 yard medley relay, in which the team of Corey Hughey, Kim Zachensky, Rachel Warkentin, and Elizabeth Charter claimed first place, setting a new CCSA record with a time of 1:42.03. In the 100 yard butterfly, Elizabeth Charter timed in at second at 54.96, and Rachel Warkentin finished in fourth with a time of 56.42.
After setting the new CCSA women's 100 yard breaststroke record of 1:02.25 in the morning prelims, Kim Zachensky finished first in the final, reaching the wall at 1:02.58. Stepheni Stadnik finished second, timing in at 1:04.73. Corey Hughey won the 100 yard backstroke for the second consecutive year with a time of 55.10. Sarah Steadman finished seventh in the event with a time of 57.77. In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the team of Rachel Warkentin, Lizzy Ketterer, Jenna Voelkert and Katherine Glenn touched the wall in fourth place at 7:37.66
Saturday, Elizabeth Ketterer placed twelfth in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 17:56.65. In the 200 yard backstroke, Corey Hughey finished third with a time of 2:00.85, and Sarah Steadman finished fifth with a time of 2:04.28. Elizabeth Charter finished second in the 100 yard freestyle, touching the wall at 51.16. Kim Zachensky placed first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.38, which set a new CCSA record for the event. In the 200 yard butterfly, Rachel Warkentin placed second, timing in at 2:03.94.
With an impressive outing in the 2010 CCSA Championships, the Lady Bulldogs will now prepare for the forthcoming 2010-11 season and a chance of becoming the 2011 CCSA Champions.
