
Gardner-Webb Softball Week Eleven Game Notes (Games 47-51)

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb will wrap up its 2010 regular season slate this week, as the Lady Bulldogs will play five games in five days, wrapping up its slate with a double header on the road at East Tennessee State on Saturday, May 1 in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Lady Bulldogs (17-29, 7-10 Big South) will play its final
conference game of the regular season on Tuesday, April 27, at 4
p.m. as the Winthrop Lady Eagles will come to Varsity Field in
Boiling Springs, N.C. for the third and final game of the
conference series.
On Wednesday afternoon, April 28, the Lady Bulldogs will host its
final home games of the 2010 season, as GWU will take on the Lady
Rams of Winston-Salem State in a non-conference twin bill starting
at 2 p.m.
Gardner-Webb will then hit the road for its final regular season
contests, as the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Johnson City, Tenn.
to square off with the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State with the
non-conference double header scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
Winthrop is 24-22 overall this season and 7-7 in conference play
having dropped four out of its last six Big South games. In fact,
since picking up two extra inning wins over Gardner-Webb back on
April 13, the Lady Eagles have struggled, losing six of its last
eight games. Like GWU, the Lady Eagles find themselves in the
middle of the pack of the regular season conference standings and
will look for a win to help push them to the upper half of the Big
South standings. Offensively, Winthrop is led by Taylor Wright, as
she leads the team in hitting with a .325 average, 40 hits, seven
doubles, two triples and is second with three home runs on the
season. In the circle, Cari Wooldridge leads the Lady Eagles, as
she has posted a team high 13 wins and 20 complete games, while
recording a team-low 2.18 ERA on the year.
GWU is 5-12 versus the Winthrop Lady Eagles since moving to
Division I in 2000-
01, including two extra inning losses to the Lady Eagles earlier
this season in Rock Hill, S.C. Gardner-Webb's last win came in
2008 when the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Eagles 4-3 in game
one of a double header. Last season, Winthrop swept the three-game
series over Gardner-Webb.
The WSSU Lady Rams are 6-22 overall and 3-9 in road contests this
season heading into action this week. The Lady Rams have lost five
straight since picking up back to back wins over North Carolina
Central on April 15. Kayla Woodbury leads WSSU at the plate, as she
is hitting .367 with a team-high four home runs in 29 hits, while
Whitney Hall leads the team with 21 RBIs and nine doubles. The
Lady Rams pitching staff has been a two women show for most of the
season, as the duo of Brittany Lane and Tiffany Burgess have
combined to post a 6-21 record this season.
The Lady Bulldogs are 6-0 all-time versus the Lady Rams of
Winston-Salem State, with all six wins coming in the last three
years. GWU swept WSSU last season in Winston-Salem, N.C.,
defeating the Lady Rams 10-0 and 9-0.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers enter play this week with an
18-34 overall record and are 5-15 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
The Buccaneers, who will host Western Carolina in a double header
on Wednesday, April 28, are 4-8 at home this season and are looking
to get back on the winning track heading into its conference
tournament. The Buccaneers this season have had two wins over
Furman and Appalachian State, who both defeated GWU earlier this
season, yet were swept by Liberty, Presbyterian College and USC
Upstate. Cheniece Cason leads ETSU at the plate, as she is the
lone Buccaneer hitting over .300 with an average of .360 on the
season. As for the pitching, Jessica Duncan leads the ETSU staff
with eight wins, five complete games, 75 strikeouts and an ERA of
2.97.
GWU is 7-7 overall versus ETSU since going Division I in 2001, yet
are only 3-5 against the Buccaneers at Johnson City, Tennessee. The
two teams' last met in 2008 as Atlantic Sun Conference foes, as
ETSU swept the regular season series at Johnson City, Tenn. and
then defeated the Lady Bulldogs in the A-Sun Tournament.
