SERIES VS. LIPSCOMB
GWU and Lipscomb will renew their rivalry after taking the last two
years off this Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. GWU holds an
overall 7-6 edge in the series over the Bisons and have won the
last two meetings between these two teams. However, GWU is only 1-2
versus Lipscomb in non-conference action, as he other six wins came
in Atlantic Sun Conference play from 2002-08. Gardner-Webb has
also struggled at Allen Arena, as the Runnin' Bulldogs are only 1-4
on Lipscomb's home court.
ROAD TRIP!
GWU is in the midst of their longest road trip of the season, as
Sunday's contest is the second game in a five-game road swing
before the new year. GWU is 0-3 on the road thus far this season
and will play three more games on the road before returning home to
host Charleston Southern on January 7th.
A RARITY FOR THE RUNNIN' BULLDOGS
GWU's 0-8 start this season is the Runnin' Bulldogs worst start
under head coach Rick Reeves in his eight seasons at the helm of
the women's basketball program. The 0-8 start is GWU's worst start
since beginning the 2003-04 at 0-10, the year prior to Coach
Reeves' arrival to Boiling Springs, N.C.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team could not overcome its
cold shooting and its turnovers, as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to
No. 15/13 Louisville, 92-27, last Saturday afternoon at the KFC
Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. The young Runnin' Bulldog squad
struggled out of the gates against the full-court Louisville
pressure, committing seven turnovers on their first seven
possessions of the contest, as the Cardinals took a 14-2 lead at
the first media timeout. The Runnin' Bulldogs, who shot only 29.4
percent in the first half overall, was only 5-of-17 from the floor
overall, while the Cardinals, who shot 42.5 percent, were 17-of-40
overall from the field and 5-of-17 from behind the three-point
line. In the second-half, the Runnin' Bulldogs came out with both
poise and aggression, as sophomore center Catrina Green scored all
seven of GWU's points over the first five minutes to put the score
at 57-21 in favor of the Cardinals with 15:19 to go in the contest.
However, the Runnin' Bulldogs would fall back in another offensive
rut, as other than a rebound and put back by Green, Gardner-Webb
failed to score over the next nine minutes of play until a
left-handed runner by freshman guard KiKi Smith fell at the six
minute mark. Green led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 11 points, nine of
which came in the second half, and eight rebounds, while no other
player had more than four points for the game.
GWU WILL RETURN IN HOME AFTER THE NEW YEAR
Gardner-Webb will not return home until after the New Year, as
GWU's next five games are all on the road. The Runnin' Bulldogs
next home game is against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on
Saturday, January 7th, at 5 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
