Carrollton, G.A.- The Gardner-Webb volleyball team staged a dramatic comeback victory on Saturday morning, overcoming an early two-set deficit to defeat Mercer University 3-2 (18-25, 19-25, 28-26, 25-20, 15-12) at The Coliseum. With the win, the Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 5-4 on the season.
After dropping the opening two sets 25-18 and 25-19, Gardner-Webb turned the match around in an extended, highly contested third set. The Bulldogs survived eight tie scores and five lead changes to claim the set 28-26, staving off the sweep. GWU built on that momentum in the fourth frame with an 11-kill performance to win 25-20 and force a deciding fifth set.
In a tense final set featuring 11 tie scores and five lead changes, Gardner-Webb hit .240 with eight kills and only two errors to close out the match 15-12.
