
GWU Softball Wraps Up 2011 Regular Season This Week

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs will wrap up its 2011 regular season slate this week, as head coach Tom Cole and his squad will host South Carolina State on Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a non-conference double-header before hitting the road to wrap up conference play with a three-game weekend series as Coastal Carolina on Saturday and Sunday in Conway, S.C.
Gardner-Webb has won two of its last three games and snapped a six-game losing streak last week. The Runnin' Bulldogs, who are 13-24 overall and 5-10 in the Big South will look to finish the regular season on a high note and get hot before competing in the 2011 Big South Softball Championship tournament on May 12-14th in Rock Hill, S.C.
While the GWU offense is still led by freshman Samantha Meenaghan, who is hitting a team-high .341 with 21 runs scored, and redshirt-freshman Morgan Baker, who is hitting .292 with a team-high 18 RBIs, junior catcher McKenzie Morenus has come on of late, blasting her team-high fourth home run over the weekend and helping lead GWU to two straight wins over Charleston Southern.
Gardner-Webb's pitching had a strong weekend last week as well, as Cindy Boomhower went six scoreless innings in a 1-0 shutout win over Charleston Southern on Saturday, while on Friday night, Jessica Childers held the Buccaneers to only two runs over eight innings to help GWU to a 3-2 extra inning win.
The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs are 8-36 overall on the season and 3-6 in MEAC play. S.C. State is coming off an 11-10 conference win over Norfolk State, which came on the road.
The Lady Bulldogs, who are 3-9 on the road this season, are led by Denitia Carter and Sonya Giles at the plate. Carter is hitting a team-high .316 with a slugging percentage of .447, while Giles is hitting .300 with 11 RBIs. Shannon Baity and LaTavia Riley lead the way with 18 RBIs apiece, while Tonya Giles has scored a team-high 19 runs. S.C. State has two pitchers in Raven Johnson and Vianney Gomez, as both pitchers are 4-18 on the year with respective ERA's of 4.68 and 6.16.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are 20-28 overall this season and 4-8 in Big South play. The Chanticleers are coming off a 14-7 extra inning win over Presbyterian College on Saturday, April 23rd, after dropping both games of a twin bill on Friday. After dropping 16 straight games from late March to early April, the Chanticleers are 6-6 over its last 12 games, with four of those games coming in conference play.
Coastal Carolina enters play this week in sixth-place, one spot ahead of Gardner-Webb, who is in seventh-place in the conference standings.
The Chanticleers have two players hitting over .285 on the season, as Chelsea Pineda leads the way with six home runs and seven doubles, while Brooke Donovan is hitting .289 with a team-high 44 hits. Pitcher Ashley Bagwell leads the pitching corp. with a 10-13 record overall and a 2.65 ERA, while Michelle Evans is 6-9 overall with a 3.59 ERA.
