GWU Battles Heat, Stetson to 0-0 Double OT Tie Sunday Afternoon
September 11, 2011 | Women's Soccer
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs gave a solid defensive effort and had numerous offensive opportunities, but could not get a goal across and played visiting Stetson to a 0-0 double overtime tie on a blistering Sunday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Field.
The double overtime thriller in the final game of the 2011 Under Armour Border Classic ended in the third tie of the season for GWU, as the Runnin' Bulldogs battled all afternoon to keep its one loss season record intact.
Gardner-Webb saw a couple of early opportunities go for naught, as shots from Megan Reimer (4th minute), Meagan Reynolds (7th minute) and Dawn Rollyson (20th minute) were saved by Stetson keeper Laura Seletos.
Stetson countered with two shots on goal in the 10th minute from Kassandra Hartwick. GWU keeper Erika Lenns stopped Hartwick's attempts, recording 2 of her 4 first-half saves.
Much of the 2nd period was played near midfield, as neither defense gave up anything easy the rest of the way. Both keepers had to make key saves to keep their teams in the game, as Lenns tallied eight saves in the game while Seletos recorded six.
GWU's Megan Curan nearly supplied the game winner in the 8th minute of the 1st OT period, but her shot attempt from 20 yards out was saved by a diving Seletos.
Suffocating defense, as well as a suffocating heat index, played a factor in the remaining minutes, as neither team could get a good look at the net to put across the deciding goal.
With the tie, Gardner-Webb moves to 2-1-3 on the season while Stetson goes to 1-5-1 in 2011.
GWU put three players on the 2011 Under Armour Border Classic All-Tournament Team for its 2nd place effort in the tournament this weekend. Senior Dawn Rollyson (3 G, 5 SH, 4 SOG, hat trick vs. JSU), freshman Megan Curan (5 SH, 2 SOG, 1 A), and senior defender Tina Frost (1 A) made the team for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Rounding out the All-Tournament team was Courtney Hurt (JSU), Nathalie Lariviere (JSU), Katie O'Kennedy (Stetson), Colleen O'Kennedy (Stetson), Becca Smith (Chattanooga), Andrea Aurand (Chattanooga), Lauren Wilson (Chattanooga), and Donna Kay-Henry (Chattanooga). Kay-Henry, who played forward for the tournament champion Mocs, earned MVP honors.
GWU will be back in action this weekend, staying at home to face George Washington Friday, Sep. 16 at 7:00 p.m. on the friendly turf of Greene-Harbison Field.
