
Gardner-Webb Unable to Hang on in 2-1 loss vs. George Washington

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb nearly weathered an offensive storm by visiting George Washington, but fell 2-1 in a match that saw two penalty kicks and three second half goals.
Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Erika Lenns kept the Runnin' Bulldogs in the game early, registering 5 saves in a first half where the pace was largely controlled by the visiting Colonials. However she and the Runnin' Bulldog backline, led by senior Tina Frost and freshman Addison Abee, helped keep the visitors off the board.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to consistently get open looks on the offensive end and were outshot 7-2 by George Washington in the first period. Senior Megan Reimer provided the lone shot on goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the first half.
Gardner-Webb sophomore Meagan Reynolds shifted momentum in the Runnin' Bulldogs' favor in the 50th minute, capitalizing on a penalty kick the after a handball inside the Colonials' box and putting Gardner-Webb on top 1-0.
The Runnin' Bulldogs kept the Colonial offensive attack in check until the 74th minute when George Washington's Adriana Moya scored on a penalty kick of her own following a Gardner-Webb foul inside the box.
Lenns helped keep the scored knotted at 1-1 with a spectacular diving save in the 75th minute. The Colonials struck back soon after, as Moya played a cross into the Gardner-Webb box for Taylor Katz, who got the ball past Lenns into the back of the net for the final 2-1 margin.
Gardner-Webb's Megan Curan nearly provided the equalizer during a furious rally in the 88th minute, but it was saved by Colonials keeper Nicole Ulrick.
Gardner-Webb drops to 2-2-3 on the season, while George Washington improves its record to 3-5 this year.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will next travel to face Georgia State of the Atlantic Sun Conference Sunday, Sep. 18 in Atlanta, GA. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
