Dinsmore's Personal Best Leads GWU Women's Swimming on Day One of the Wingate Fall Frenzy

Charlotte, N.C. - Freshman Madi Dinsmore cracked the 5:00.0 mark in the 500 free for the first time in her career, and Gardner-Webb women's swimming tallied six Top 5 performances Friday on day one of the three-day Wingate Fall Frenzy.
GWU was able to weather its lack of diving to earn a 4th place standing in the women's team standings. The Gardner-Webb women (227 pts.) are just behind 3rd place Queens (238 pts.), 2nd place Georgia Southern (241 pts.), and 1st place College of Charleston (255 pts.) after the first day of competition.
Gardner-Webb opened the night with a 3rd place finish in the 200 free relay. Anna Springer led off (24.38) for the Runnin' Bulldogs, Christina Clayton (24.23) and Charity Byrum (23.70) swam the second and third legs respectively, and Alaina Mattix (24.72) anchored for GWU's 'A' relay to secure a season best time of 1:37.03.
Freshman Madi Dinsmore (New Ipswich, N.H.) shattered her previous best time to finish 2nd in the 500 free, turning in a time of 4:59.60 to lead the GWU women in the event. Liz Van Halsema, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., swam a season best 5:09.04 to take 10th in the event. Senior Kristen Michal (Katy, Texas) finished in a season best 5:16.22 in the event.
In the 200 I.M., sophomore Charity Byrum (Winston-Salem, N.C.) finished 2nd, turning in a season best time of 2:07.33 in prelims of the event. Faith Kempf, a junior from Sterling, Kan., moved up in finals to take 4th at 2:09.90 and junior Samantha Shelley (Wilmington, Del.) finished 5th with a time of 2:10.32.
Senior Michelle Palacio (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Jessica Robinson (Aiken, S.C.) also finaled for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event, finishing with times of 2:12.08 (12th) and 2:12.92 (14th) in the event.
Clayton, a freshman from Brentwood, Tenn., turned in GWU's fastest time in the 50 free (24.21) en route to a 5th place finish. Junior Anna Springer (Snellville, Ga.) sprinted to a 7th finish in the event in a season best 24.39 to give the Runnin' Bulldogs two Top 8 finishers in the event.
Another GWU freshman, Mattix (Loganville, Ga.), was 10th in the 50 free after moving up in finals with a time of 24.88.
The night's final event, the 400 medley relay, saw GWU turn in a season best time of 3:52.70. Laurenn Singleton (58.48) , Byrum (1:04.58), Giorgie Graves (55.71), and Mattix (53.93) combined to give the Runnin' Bulldog women a 2nd place finish in the event.
Day two of the three-day Wingate Fall Frenzy opens with tomorrow morning's prelims session, to be followed by the finals session Saturday evening.
