
Unselfishness Leads GWU to Rout of Asbury, 76-41

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb guards Mayhana Dunovant and Doreen Richardson each dished out a career-high seven assists, as the Runnin' Bulldogs registered 22 assists overall as a team in a 76-41 rout of Asbury University on Saturday night in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The win pushes GWU to 4-2 overall and 4-0 at home in Paul Porter Arena this season.
GWU had four players in double figures on the night led by Dunovant and Olivia Parker, who had 13 points apiece, followed by Jessica Heilig's 12 points and Tabby Koerner's 10 points for the contest.
Freshman Alicia Quinn hauled in a career-high seven rebounds, one shy of the team high of eight pulled down by Koerner, which was also a career-high.
Trenia Barbee's 12 points and nine rebounds led the Eagles, while point guard Laura Carroll added 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting for the game.
As a team, the Runnin' Bulldogs dished out 22 assists overall and outscored the Asbury Eagles 61-14 in points in the paint, 22-4 in fast break points and 40-12 in points off the bench.
Gardner-Webb shot a team-high 49.3 percent (34-of-69) from the field, yet was only 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from the free throw line for the contest.
After a slow start by both teams' saw the score at 9-6 in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs at the 14:53 mark of the first half, Gardner-Webb got a fast break layup by Candace Brown at the 14:48 mark to jump start a 18-3 run over the next eight minutes of play to run out to a 25-9 lead on a fast break jumper with 6:20 to go in the opening half.
The 16-point lead would be the exact point difference at the end of the first half, as GWU doubled up the Eagles 32-16 at the halftime intermission.
The home team ran out to a 7-0 run to start the second half to take a 23-point lead at 39-16 with 18:37 to go in the contest.
Asbury refused to go away, outscoring the Runnin' Bulldogs 13-7 over the next nine minutes of the contest to cut the Gardner-Webb lead to 17 at 46-29 on an old-fashion three-point play from Barbee.
The GWU defense and pace quickly picked up, as the Runnin' Bulldogs finished the half out strong, scoring from down low in the paint and in a number of fast break plays, to outscored Asbury 25-12 down the stretch, including a 7-0 run, to push its lead out to as much as 36 en route to the 76-41 home win.
The Runnin' Bulldogs', who held Asbury to 20.4 percent shooting (11-of-54), forced the Eagles into 22 turnovers, which included 13 thefts and six swats.
GWU, who out rebounded the Eagles 51-33 on the night, improves to 4-0 on the year when pulling down more boards than its opponents.
Gardner-Webb (4-2) will look to remain unbeaten at home this season, as the Runnin' Bulldogs' will open up conference play at home on Saturday, December 1st, against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
