Boiling Springs, N.C. - The accolades continue to come in for Gardner-Webb junior Denzel Clarke for his outstanding overall performance last week in the Runnin' Bulldogs' two conference wins on the pitch, as he was named the Madness Men's Soccer Big South Player of the Week by College Sports Madness (www.collegesportsmadness.com).
Clarke, who was named the Choice Hotels Big South Men's Soccer Player of the Week by the League office on Monday, registered four goals last week to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a pair of League wins over Presbyterian and VMI. Against Presbyterian on October 15th, he scored three goals in a span of five minutes in the second half to propel Gardner-Webb to the 6-1 win for his second hat trick of the season. He followed that performance up with the game-winner in the 74th minute to give GWU the 2-1 win at VMI on October 19th.
Clarke's four goals last week pushed his season total to 12 on the year, which not only leads the Big South Conference, but also is tied for first-place overall nationally among all NCAA Division I men's soccer programs.
His 12 goals this season also set a new GWU Division I single season record for the most goals by a single player in one year since Gardner-Webb transitioned to the NCAA Division I level in 2000-01.
College Sports Madness identifies the players who have made the greatest impact to their team from each conference and on a national basis each week.
