Lynchburg, Va. - Jasmine
Miles reset her own school record in the women's discus throw,
and Alex
Young achieved his third top 8 finish of the weekend to lead
Gardner-Webb track & field on the final day of the 2013 Big
South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
In the women's standings, the Runnin' Bulldogs finished in
seventh place, earning 42.5 points over the three day Conference
Championships. GWU finished just 9.25 points out of fifth place UNC
Asheville (51.75 pts.) and only 5.5 points behind High Point (48
pts.).
Senior Ivana
Hughes scored two top 8 finishes for her squad on Saturday. The
Evans, Ga. native finished fifth in the women's 400 m dash, racing
to a time of 56.14, and added an eighth place finish in the 800 m
run to score valuable points.
Freshman Sarah
Perkins (Gorham, Maine) achieved a top 8 finish in the women's
400 m hurdles. Perkins finished with the fifth best time in the
event, crossing the finish line at 1:01.75 in her first-ever Big
South Championship final.
In the women's discus throw, Jasmine
Miles (Amelia, Va.) reset her own school record, achieving a
distance of 44.68 m (146' 7"). The junior took seventh place in the
event for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Fellow junior Kyntoya
Hansford (Miami, Fla.) finished 13th in the event, tossing
36.39 m (119' 5").
GWU finished in eighth place in the women's 4x100 m relay. Ashley
Slate, Perkins, Nicole
Saxton, and T'Keyah
Bell teamed up for a time of 49.49 in the event.
In the 4x400 m relay, Gardner-Webb achieved a fourth place
finish. Bell, Perkins, Saxton, and Hughes teamed up to record the
Runnin' Bulldog women's fastest time of the season in the event at
3:54.50.
Gardner-Webb finished in eighth place in the men's team
standings, accumulating 44 points over the three-day Championship
meet. The Runnin' Bulldogs finished just 19 points behind sixth
place Campbell (65 pts.) and 12 points behind seventh place Radford
(56 pts.).
In the men's discus throw, freshmen Alex
Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) and A.J.
White (Hurricane, W.Va.) each earned top 5 finishes for the
Runnin' Bulldogs. Young took fifth place in the event, throwing
46.56 m (152' 9"), and White finished sixth, tossing 44.93 m (147'
5").
Gardner-Webb occupied the fifth and sixth spots in the men's
pole vault. Redshirt freshman Tyler
Samotis (Hendersonville, N.C.) achieved a height of 4.50 m (14'
9") to take fifth, and freshman Tyler
Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) rose up for the same height to
finish in sixth place.
Junior Terry
Davis (Wilson, N.C.) took sixth place in the men's triple jump,
leaping for a distance of 14.02 m (46' 0"). Davis was followed by
fellow Runnin' Bulldog jumper Chuboy
Umeadi, who finished with the ninth best jump at 13.62 m (44'
8.25").
Distance specialist Mike
McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished 20th in the men's 5,000 m.
The junior raced to a time of 15:33.92.
GWU's 4x100 m relay squad gave the Runnin' Bulldogs an eighth

Ferguson combined for a time of 42.87 in the event.
The Gardner-Webb men finished tenth in the 4x400 m relay.
Harris, William Cottrell, Trey
Crook, and McClay teamed up to finish with a time of
3:28.80.
