GWU Men Take 5th, Women Finish in 7th Place at 2014 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Rock Hill, S.C. - Kayin Mujahid and Alex Young won individual events, and Gardner-Webb's track & field teams took home 5th (men) and 7th (women) place finishes at the 2014 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Winthrop University (Rock Hill, S.C.).

Mujahid, the League's reigning Women's Field Athlete of the Week, rose up for her first Conference Championship in the women's high jump. The freshman from Philadelphia, Pa. topped the field by clearing the bar at 1.68 m to give Gardner-Webb a 1st place finish in the event.

Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) added another Conference title to his resume, taking 1st place in the men's Hammer Throw with a Facility Record 59.88 m. The sophomore won the fourth Big South Title of his career with the performance and defended his Hammer Throw Title from last year's Big South Outdoor Championships.

The Runnin' Bulldogs also got All-Conference performances from Olivia Moody, Nathan Padfield, Sarah Mitchell, Josiah Stanton-Brooks, Tyler Craig, Tyler Marsengill, and Elise Moffatt.

Moody, a senior from Plano, Ill., turned in an All-Big South performance in her final Big South Championships, placing 3rd in the Heptathlon behind a personal best 4,256 points. In the Heptathlon, Moody tied for the best High Jump mark (1.58 m) as well as the 3rd best Shot Put distance (10.32 m). Moody also turned in personal best performances in the 200 m Dash (26.88) and the 800 m Run (2:39.09 during the event.

Padfield, a junior, stepped up to post a personal best and make the podium in the men's Hammer Throw, recording a distance of 58.12 m to finish with All-Big South honors in placing 3rd in the event.

Mitchell, a freshman from Roswell, Ga., achieved All-Conference honors in the women's Discus Throw, tossing 40.17 m to take 3rd place in the event. Mitchell added a 6th place finish in the Shot Put throwing 12.74 m in the event and threw a personal best in the Hammer Throw (44.65 m) in finishing 13th.

Stanton-Brooks, a senior from Seattle, Wash., gave GWU an All-Conference performance in the men's 800 m Run, placing 3rd in the event in crossing the finish line at 1:55.22.

Moffatt, a freshman from Kennesaw, Ga., took 3rd place in the women's Pole Vault, clearing the bar at 3.57 m to record the first Outdoor All-Conference performance of her collegiate career.

Craig (Talking Rock, Ga.) and Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) took 2nd and 3rd in the men's Pole Vault to earn All-Conference honors. Craig, a freshman, broke the Facility Record by clearing 4.80 m and Marsengill, a sophomore, set a personal best by clearing the 4.65 m bar.

In the men's shot put, A.J. White led the Gardner-Webb men with a 4th place finish, throwing 15.36 m in the event. The sophomore, whose distance in the event marked a personal best, was joined in the Top 12 by Young's 11th best throw at 14.29 m.

Junior Ben Bell (Greensboro, N.C.) finished 4th in a tight Top 4 in the men's Decathlon, accumulating a total of 6,225 points. During the event, Bell posted the 2nd fastest 100 m Dash time (11.39) and recorded personal bests in the High Jump (1.88 m), 400 m Dash (52.30), Pole Vault (3.60 m), and 1,500 m Run (4:43.39).

Sarah Perkins (Gorham, Maine) reached finals in the women's 400 m Hurdles, placing 5th in the event to score for GWU. Perkins, a sophomore, achieved times of 1:02.74 (prelims) and 1:02.75 (finals) in the event.

In the men's 110 m Hurdles, sophomore Josh Wembolua finished with a Top 8 performance. Seeded 7th going into finals, Wembolua moved up by sprinting to a time of 15.02 in finals, good for 7th.

Gardner-Webb got an impressive throwing performance from Carson Sears, a senior from Suwanee, Ga. Sears placed 6th in the men's Hammer Throw, giving GWU three Top 6 finishers in the event thanks to a throw of 55.94 m.

Senior Mike McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) raced to a 7th place showing in the 10,000 m Run, crossing the finish line with a personal best and school record time of 31:20.62 to add valuable points for Gardner-Webb in the event. McClay also picked up a 10th place finish in the men's 5,000 m Run with a time of 15:18.51.

In the women's javelin throw, senior Katie Spiro (Sylva, N.C.) scored for the Runnin' Bulldogs with an 8th place showing. Spiro threw 34.93 m in the event.

Gardner-Webb's Terry Davis placed 6th in the men's Triple Jump. The senior from Wilson, N.C. landed with a distance of 13.52 m in the event.

In the men's Discus Throw, White (Hurricane, W.Va.) scored with an 8th place finish, throwing 41.62 m. White was joined in the Top 8 by Padfield (LaVergne, Tenn.), who followed in 9th place with a distance of 41.32 m.

Freshman Seaver Wait (Candler, N.C.) scored points for Gardner-Webb in the men's High Jump thanks to a personal best performance. The Runnin' Bulldog rookie leaped 1.90 m to take 8th place in the event.

Senior Jasmine Miles (Amelia, Va.) led Gardner-Webb with a Top 10 finish in the women's Hammer Throw, tossing 46.22 m to take 10th in the event.

GWU secured a 6th place finish in the women's 4x100 m Relay from Jordan Davis, Merideth Byl, Kayin Mujahid, and Sarah Perkins, who teamed up for a time of 49.05. Gardner-Webb's men's 4x100 m quartet, comprised of Malik Crawford, Richard Jules, Brandaun Addison, and Stanley Fleurant, combined for a 5th place finish and time of 43.19.

In the women's 4x400 m relay, Jordan Davis, Nicole Saxton, Kayin Mujahid, and Sarah Perkins raced to a 5th place finish in 3:53.85. Joseph Martin, Malik Crawford, Richard Jules, and Josiah Stanton-Brooks teamed up for a time of 3:20.99, good for 5th place in the event.
