Gardner-Webb Breaks Ground On New Brinkley Softball Stadium Complex
September 19, 2014 | Softball
BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb University officials and lead donors David and Marie Brinkley put shovels to soil Friday morning to break ground on the new softball stadium on South Main Street.
In June, the University announced plans for the construction of a new stadium, to be built in the same location as the current field and named for David and Marie Brinkley, owners of Brinkley Financial Group based in nearby Kings Mountain, N.C.
The project will included spacious dugouts, permanent seating for 350 spectators, concession space and a state-of-the-art press box – which will house a main working area and two broadcast booths to accommodate a wide range of broadcast operations.
A building behind the first base dugout will offer space for coaches' offices, a modern locker room, conference room and athletic training area.
One of the facilities most important pieces, a new practice facility, will be constructed beyond the outfield fence – offering student-athletes enough indoor space to work on hitting, fielding and base running during inclement weather.
A large group of spectators gathered at the stadium site on Friday for the ceremony, including faculty, staff, current softball student-athletes and alumni who played for Coach Tom Cole in the softball program.
