WILLIAMSBURG, Va. --- Amanda Steinmuller (Ellicott, Md.) scored two goals, William & Mary built a 10-2 first-half lead behind four early strikes and controlled 20-of-27 draws en route to a 22-3 non-conference victory over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon.
Steinmuller led the way for Gardner-Webb (0-9) with two goals, swelling her team-leading season total to 12, as Monique Martin (Tyngsborough, Mass.) added a goal. Martin recorded game-highs of five ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Emma Rose (Weston, Fla.) tallied her team-leading fifth assist. Raygan Hall (Cleveland, Tenn.) made seven saves between the pipes.
Ellen Shaffrey paced William & Mary (3-5) with five goals on nine shots, as Amanda Johnson added a hat trick. Abby Corkum and Shannon Quinn each chipped in two goals, while Corkum dished out four assists. Shaffrey recorded four ground balls and three draw controls for the Tribe, as Meredith Crizer and Alex Lista each made one save.
William & Mary jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first eight minutes before Martin got the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board, scoring her seventh of the season on a free position shot to trim the margin to 5-1 at 21:19. After Steinmuller cut the lead further to 5-2 at the 15:33 mark, Johnson answered for the Tribe with her second of the day to push the margin back to four at 6-2.
The Tribe added four strikes over the next six minutes, stretching the advantage to 10-2 following a goal from Emma MacLeod with 8:27 left in the first half. William & Mary would push the margin to 15-2 heading into the break with four late strikes.
William & Mary opened the second half with six goals in the first 15 minutes, stretching the advantage to 21-2 before Steinmuller netted Gardner-Webb's third of the afternoon, and team-leading 12th of the season at the 7:35 mark.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Saturday, April 4 when the Runnin' Bulldogs host High Point at 3:30 pm to open their inaugural Big South Conference schedule.
