MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Speedy Gardner-Webb baseball recruit Chris Clary more than held his own against the top players in South Carolina, earning MVP honors at the 2015 SCBCA All-Star weekend.
Clary (Gaffney, S.C. / Gaffney HS) signed with the Runnin' Bulldogs in November and is expected to push for early playing time in the outfield.
Playing for the North 1A/4A squad during the all-star festivities, Clary went a combined 3-for-5 with a walk, three steals and RBI and one run scored to lead his team to a 2-0 record on the weekend.
"We are extremely proud of Chris' accomplishments at the high school level and his MVP award at the recent North/South All-Star Weekend," said Gardner-Webb head coach Rusty Stroupe. "We are looking forward to welcoming him and the rest of our incoming class to Gardner-Webb in August and expect big things from this class in the future."
The weekend accolade was far from Clary's only achievement this season.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound standout enjoyed another strong season in the outfield under Coach Jeff Osment at Gaffney (S.C.) High, batting .394 with 14 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 2015.
That effort earned Clary a spot on the 2015 South Carolina High School Sports Report (HSSR) All-State Team – and a spot on the Spartanburg Herald-Journal's annual All-Area first-team.
Clary, who covers the 60-yard dash in a blazing 6.57 seconds, has swiped 35 bases over the past two seasons for the Indians. He also starred for a strong Mountain Expos summer travel team.
He is rated as the No. 14 prospect in South Carolina by Perfect Game and has been lauded not only for his speed and offensive prowess, but also for an outstanding arm and defensive ability in the outfield.
