Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

'Dawgs Top Radford 3-2 in Double Overtime

RADFORD, V.A. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team hit the road to face off with Big South opponent Radford this weekend. In double overtime, the Runnin' Bulldogs collected their third victory of the season behind a big game by Stina Kleppe.

Following the match, head coach Mike Varga stated, "I couldn't be more proud of this group. We fought back from the first half goal and stuck to our game plan."

Radford opened the scoring in the 39th minute as McKensey Ziegler scored her first goal of the season on a corner kick by Allyson Giannone.

Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Gardner-Webb responded with two goals to give them the lead in the 57th minute. Aubrie Jackson found the back of the net for her first career goal as fellow freshman, Emily Jonas took the free kick while Jackson gathered possession and was able to convert the opportunity for a goal at the 50:45 mark.

In the 57th minute, Stina Kleppe scored her first goal of the day from 30 yards out to put the 'Dawgs up 2-1.

The Highlanders responded three minutes later at the 60:45 mark as Gabi Paupst scored unassisted on a free kick finding the left upper 90.

At the end of regulation, the score stood at 2-2. After the first overtime period, the game still remained tied.

In the 105th minute, Samuelle Grove made her way down the right side of the field, crossing the ball to Kleppe whose shot snuck beyond reach of the Radford keeper, lifting Gardner-Webb to a big conference victory.

The Runnin' Bulldogs recorded 22 shots on the day, with nine on goal. Stina Kleppe, Samuelle Grove, and Bailey Hierholzer all had two shots on goal in the match.

Radford took 17 shots in the match with six on goal. Jessica Wollman was the lone Highlander to record multiple shots on goal in the match for Radford.

Gardner-Webb goalkeeper, Keely Brown tallied four saves between the posts today for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Courtenay Kaplan recorded six saves, conceding three goals for Radford.

"Radford has some incredibly talented players and I thought even though we gave up two goals today, our team defending was solid. Add that to our composure in front of the goal to finish our chances, and it was a good formula to get a much needed win," said Varga.

With today's win, the Runnin' Bulldogs climb to (3-9-1, 1-2-1 BSC) while Radford falls to (8-5, 1-4 BSC). Gardner-Webb is back in action next as they welcome High Point to Greene-Harbison Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 PM.
