Women's Soccer Earns Team Academic Award for 2016-2017

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team was recently recognized by the United Soccer Coaches Organization as they received the Team Academic Award for the 2016-2017 school year. The Runnin' Bulldogs collectively boasted a 3.53 GPA as they recorded a 9-8-3 record on the season.
A total of 540 women's soccer programs throughout the country in all divisions were recognized, earning the award for the school year. Three other Big South women's soccer programs earned the award including: UNC Asheville, Radford, and Winthrop.
Head coach Mike Varga stated, "Each year, academic goals for the team are a priority and I am proud of the hard work that each member of the team puts in to attain our goals. It isn't easy to achieve a 3.5 so for a team to average over 3.5 is quite an accomplishment."
Callista Eckert and Jessica Ferguson both boasted a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
Fourteen different players recorded a GPA of 3.5-3.99, while seven players earned a 3.0-3.49 GPA on the year.
Following a good season on the field, and an excellent year in the classroom, Varga claimed, "This group is driven and holds themselves to high standards and I am humbled to be around these incredible young women on a daily basis."
