BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A cold shooting night doomed the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team, as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to UCF by a score of 65-30 on Friday evening inside Paul Porter Arena.
Gardner-Webb (2-2) shot just 17.6 percent from the floor, going 9-of-51 for the night, including a second period in which the Runnin' Bulldogs were just 1-of-14, shooting 7.1 percent for the frame. UCF (2-1) shot at a 40.7 percent rate for the game, going 22-of-54 from the floor.
Savannah Plentovich paced the Runnin' Bulldogs offensively, scoring 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the three-point line. She was followed by
Tierra Huntsman and
Alexus Hill, who each had six points.
The Knights were led by Aliyah Gregory, who knocked down 7-of-13 shots to score 17 points. Lawriell Wilson also reached double-digits off the bench, scoring 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting.
The first period was tightly contested, as UCF took its largest lead of the opening 10 minutes at four points on a late free throw by Gregory, giving the Knights a 12-8 advantage.
UCF would pull away in the second period, going on a 14-0 run over the final 5:49 after Huntsman knocked down a corner three with 5:49 on the clock, scoring GWU's lone points of the quarter. The Knights would lead by 18 points, 29-11, at the half.
UCF would expand its lead in the third period, outscoring the Runnin' Bulldogs by a 19-9 margin to lead 48-20 heading into the final period.
The Knights would increase their lead to a game-high 35 points with 4:49 to go after a pair of free throws by Wilson, and would go on to win by that margin, 65-30.
