Gardner-Webb Indoor Track & Field Set To Open 2017-18 Season This Weekend

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's and women's indoor track and field teams are set to begin competition for the 2017-18 season this weekend at the 2017 Mountaineer Open.
The men's team, who returns ten competitors from last year, was tabbed to finish sixth overall this season in the Big South Conference Indoor Track and Field Preseason Poll. In 2017, the Runnin' Bulldog men had three All-Conference performances at the Big South Championships, and will look to top that number at the 2018 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships in February.
Top returners for the men include Carlos Williams, who placed sixth in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 7.09 seconds at the Big South Championships. Jordan Smith and Caleb Silvey return after redshirting last season, and Clay Hamilton and Josh Parks return for their senior campaigns.
The women's squad had 23 returners from last year, and was chosen to finish seventh overall in the Big South Preseason Poll. GWU had three All-Conference finishes in 2017, as Petra Jakeljic finished third in the weight toss at the Big South Championships with a school-record toss of 17.72 meters, and Kayin Mujahid finished in second-place in the high jump with a mark of 1.69 meters. The women's 4x400 meter relay team also earned an All-Conference finish, placing third with a time of 3:55.74.
Also among the top returners for the women's squad is Natasha Akbarizadeh, who finished in sixth in the weight toss at the Big South Championships with a personal-best mark of 16.75 meters, as are Ashleigh Cleveland, Gabby Cortese, Sydney Davis, and Michaela Williams, who all return for their senior seasons.
The Runnin' Bulldogs kick off the 2017-18 campaign at the 2017 Mountaineer Open, hosted by Appalachian State at the Holmes Convention Center. The meet will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, December 8 wit the triple jump, weight throw, and the 5,000-meter run, and will resume Saturday, December 9 at 11:00 am with the remainder of the scheduled events.
