2017 Women's Soccer Preview
August 07, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Boiling Springs, NC – The Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team is eager to start their 2017 campaign. After finishing at a 9-8-3 mark in 2016, Coach Mike Varga looks to continue to see the success and growth of his program play out on the field, as he enters his fourth season as Head Coach.
"The energy has been great so far. There is an eagerness and willingness to learn and prepare during every session. I couldn't be happier with the start to our preseason training. We have a lot of returning players that understand what it takes to compete in the Big South Conference and the newcomers have stepped in and adapted to the level pretty quick", said coach Varga.
The Runnin' Bulldogs open their season with an exhibition match on August 12, against ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn. They open up regular season play at Davidson on August 18.
The teams schedule features nine Big South Conference matches, including a home match against last season's regular season champion, High Point University at home on October 12. Of their 17 regular season matches, nine of them are on the road, while eight will be played at Greene-Harbison Stadium in Boiling Springs, NC.
The team returns eight starters from last years club, while welcoming 11 newcomers: Aubrie Jackson (MF), Emily Jonas (D), Hannah Funk (GK), Tomke Zeeh (GK), Emily Elgin (MF/F), Isabel Eigenbauer (MF/F), Jana Braun (MF), Summer Hanks (F), Genesis Nogueras (F) and Alina Chavez (D). The Runnin' Bulldogs also welcome Emily Burton (MF) back for her final year of eligibility.
The team also returns junior goalkeeper Keely Brown, who recorded a team high 1898 minutes in goal last season. Samuelle Grove, who started in every game last season, also returns as their leading scorer as she found the back of the net five times last season. Grove also recorded 12 points in her 2016 campaign.
As far as what's in store for the season, Coach Varga stated, "The team has high expectations and they have worked hard up to this point to prepare for the fall, so we expect to compete for a Big South Conference Championship this fall."
