September 01, 2017 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Runnin' Bulldogs women's soccer team fell to Charlotte this evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium by a score of 0-6. Five different 49ers found the back of the net, as the team boasted 22 shots during the weather-shortened match.
Charlotte asserted their offensive dominance this evening early in the first half, as Sophie Sipprell opened the scoring with an unassisted goal from the left side of the box, which ricocheted off the right post into the goal. Virginia Lingo, Megan Greene, and Martha Thomas would also go on to score for the 49ers in the first half.
Julia Grainda continued the scoring in the second period as she scored on a header, assisted from Jamie Fankhauser at the 60:25 mark. Martha Thomas would go on to score her second goal of the match at the 71:19 mark, completing the offensive frenzy for Charlotte.
"We ran into a good team on a bad night…" said Coach Mike Varga. "We have played an extremely tough schedule, but we have to get back to doing the little things well," he continued.
The Runnin' Bulldogs posted just three shots, with two on goal in the match. They all came in the second period. Twenty-one different Runnin' Bulldogs saw action in tonight's match.
Goalkeeper Keely Brown tallied four saves, while conceding four goals. Freshman Goalkeeper Tomke Zeeh also saw time in goal this evening, recording one save while the 49ers managed to score twice with Zeeh in goal.
Coach Varga claimed, "We are being careless with the ball which is putting a lot of pressure on us defensively." While aware of areas of improvement, the team will work to "get that fixed and move forward."
Gardner-Webb falls to 0-4 on the season. They will travel to Marshall this Sunday, Sept. 3 to square off with the Thundering Herd at 1:00 PM.
