October 15, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Kansas City, Mo – The Gardner-Webb women' soccer team boasted the eighth-highest grade point average in the country and was among 813 soccer teams honored by the United Soccer Coaches with the Team Academic Award for the 2017-2018 school year.
In 2017-18 the Runnin' Bulldogs women's soccer team had a cumulative GPA of 3.67. Only EKU (3.75), DePaul (3.74), Rice (3.72), IUPUI (3.71), Grand Canyon (3.70), New Mexico (3.70) and Seton Hall (3.69) had higher GPAs than Gardner-Webb.
"Every year the women's soccer team strives for excellence in the classroom, and I am blessed to have such an academic minded, goal-oriented group," said head coach Mike Varga. "It's always an honor to be recognized for academic achievement and to have one of the top grade point averages among all NCAA Division I programs. It says a lot about our team."
Last year, Gardner-Webb senior Jessica Ferguson doubled majored in Chemistry and Spanish and led the team in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA. For her efforts academically, Ferguson was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Not only did Gardner-Webb succeed in the classroom during the 2017-18 academic year, but they have been a force to be reckoned with on the pitch during the 2018 soccer season.
Through 15 matches, Varga's squad has won eight for an overall record of 8-4-3 and a 5-1-1 mark in Big South Conference play.
With three Big South matches remaining, the Runnin' Bulldogs have a chance to earn a host-seed for the upcoming Big South Conference tournament. The 'Dogs sit second in the conference standings, trailing only Radford.
To close out the regular season, Gardner-Webb will travel to High Point (Oct. 17) and Hampton (Oct. 23) and host Campbell for senior day (Oct. 20).
For the Big South Conference tournament, the top four seeds will host a quarterfinal matchup on campus. The quarterfinals will take place from October 26-28, while the semifinals (November 2) and finals (November 4) will be held at the Matthews Sportsplex in Matthews, N.C.
