Turlington Earns Second Big South Weekly Honor in Three Weeks

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb freshman Maddie Turlington scored two goals and added a pair of assists in two victories last week, earning Freshman of the Week honors from the Big South Conference.
This is Turlington's second weekly honor from the conference in three weeks. She was previously named Attacking Player of the Week on September 24.
"Maddie has scored timely goals for us all year," said head coach Mike Varga. This past week may have been her best week yet. She has a knack for being in the right place at the right time."
Last week, Turlington led Gardner-Webb to a perfect 2-0 record with victories over the Presbyterian Blue Hose and Longwood Lancers.
In Wednesday's home match against Presbyterian, Turlington assisted on wo goals and scored one of her own in the 3-1 victory.
In the 23rd minute, Turlington sent the ball to Jada Newton, a former Big South weekly honoree, who dribbled inside the 18 and placed a ball into the back of the net from the center of the box. The goal was Newton's eighth of the year.
Turlington recorded her team-leading eighth assist of the season when she assisted Stina Kleppe's goal in the 72nd minute. Ty Snell played the ball to Turlington who sent it Kleppe in the middle of the box. Kleppe netted her fifth goal to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Less than 60 seconds after assisting on a goal, Turlington scored Gardner-Webb's third goal of the match to give the team some breathing room. The ball hit Presbyterian goalkeeper Megan Serrano who had come out to try to defend Turlington's attempt, and with an open goal, Turlington easily scored.
Following the 3-1 win over the Blue Hose, Turlington led Gardner-Webb to its third consecutive victory on Saturday evening at Longwood.
The freshman from Roanoke, Tx. scored the game-winning goal in the 40th minute as a free kick was lobbed into the box and bounced around before she gained control. Turlington scorched the game-winner into the back of the net, tallying her fifth goal of the season.
For the year, she leads the team in assists (7) and points (17) and is tied for second with five goals.
Among the Big South Conference leaders, she sits second in assists and assists per game, tied for third in points, tied for fourth in points per game, tied for eighth in goals and tied for 10th in goals per game.
Turlington and the Runnin' Bulldogs will look to the win their fourth straight Big South Conference match when they travel to High Point for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday, October 17.
