Women's Soccer to Host Winthrop in Big South Quarterfinals on Sunday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – After finishing the regular season 10-4-4 overall and nearly unblemished in Big South Conference play with a 7-1-2 mark, the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team enters the BSC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host Winthrop on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The two teams met earlier this season on October 9th in Rock Hill, where the Eagles handed the Runnin' Bulldogs their only loss in conference play.
Statistically, Stina Kleppe led the Runnin' Bulldogs during the regular season with 24 points. Kleppe and Jada Newton were Gardner-Webb's top goal scorers with nine each, while Maddie Turlington led the squad with eight assists and was tied for second in points with 18.
Six different Runnin' Bulldogs scored two or more goals over the 18-match regular season slate – Kleppe (9), Newton (9), Turlington (5), Ty Snell (3), Samuelle Grove (3) and Aubrie Jackson (2). In goal, Keely Brown led the 'Dogs with 68 stops and two shutouts. She is Gardner-Webb's all-time saves leader with 382 stops and 18 shutouts.
Three different Runnin' Bulldogs were honored by the Big South Conference with as a weekly award winner this season. Newton (Attacking Player of the Week, Aug 24), Turlington (Attacking Player of the Week, Sept. 24 and Freshman of the Week Oct. 15) and Brown (Defender of the Week, Sept. 24).
Gardner-Webb landed a program best on the Big South All-Conference teams. Kleppe and Brown headlined the Runnin' Bulldogs' honorees with first-team recognition. Four players – Brittany DeLoach, Erin Shamleffer, Grove and Newton – made the second team. Maddie Turlington and Newton were named to the All-Freshman team.
No. 2 Gardner-Webb will host No. 7 Winthrop in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference tournament this Sunday, October 28 at 2 p.m. Admission for GWU students is covered provided they sign in with their student ID. Admission for all youth/students is $3 and $5 for adults.
