BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball duo of Amanda Sahm and Hannah Donaldson were recognized for their achievements this past season, earning honors from the Big South Conference, as announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office.
Sahm (Marion, Iowa – Marion HS) was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Donaldson (Virginia Beach, Va. – Ocean Lakes HS) was named to the All-Freshman team.
Sahm is a 4.0 student with a major in Exercise Science with a Pre-Dentistry emphasis and will graduate early this December. The primary setter for the Runnin' Bulldogs, Sahm played in all 111 sets in 2018 and ranked seventh in the Big South with 6.31 assists per set. Overall, she led GWU with 700 assists and 23 service aces and finished second on the team with 255 digs this season.
"Amanda has been the epitome of what college athletics is all about," said Gardner-Webb head coach Leo Sayles. "She is a true servant-leader and has earned respect with her peers on the court and off. Her work-ethic and attitude on the court, in the weight room, and in classroom is part of the reason the team won the Iron Bulldog Award, earned AVCA Academic Team honors, and garnered three Big South Sportsmanship awards the past three years. I am proud and honored to have coached her."
Sahm is the first GWU player to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year since Evan Moffitt in 2011.
Donaldson had a stellar freshman campaign in 2018, leading the Big South with 123 total blocks, averaging 1.18 per set. She ranked third in kills for GWU with 141 and had a .195 attacking percentage.
"I knew Hannah would be a big presence on the floor, but she exceeded expectations defensively," stated Sayles. "She has the ability to dominate inside, and frustrated several teams with her big block throughout the season. I am very proud of her effort this year."
Donaldson is the first Runnin' Bulldog to make the Big South's All-Freshman team since the 2013 season, in which Brianna Starr earned such honors.
High Point's Molly Livingston was named the league's Player of the Year, while Campbell's Sarah Colla was named Freshman of the Year and Winthrop head coach Chuck Rey was selected as the Coach of the Year.
