Gardner-Webb Set To Compete at the 2018 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's and women's outdoor track and field teams look to parlay their success throughout the 2018 season at this week's Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Runnin' Bulldogs have 27 top-10 performances among all Big South competitors throughout the regular season.
Jordan Smith enters the meet with the Big South's top marks in the men's shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw. Smith set the school record in the shot put with a mark of 17.22 meters at the Charlotte Invitational, while setting new personal records in the discus toss at 50.22 meters and the hammer throw at 54.82 meters, both at the Charlotte Invitational.
Petra Jakeljic had the second-best mark of the season in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 57.21 meters at the Charlotte Invitational.
Sarah Mitchell totaled three top-ten marks throughout the season with a personal best toss of 14.32 meters at the Mountaineer Open in the women's shot put, which ranks third in the Big South, the seventh-best discus throw at 42.15 meters at the Duke Invitational, and tenth in the hammer throw at 47.16 meters at the Mountaineer Open.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Mason Marshall, Carlos Williams, Austin Billiot, and Chase Thornhill posted the second-best time of the 2018 season, setting a school record at 41.45 seconds at the Mountaineer Open.
Thornhill also has a pair of top-ten spots in the Big South rankings with the second-best time of the year in the men's 400-meter run, clocking in at 47.72 seconds at the Duke Invitational, and the fifth-best time in the 200-meter dash at 21.44 seconds at the Charlotte Invitational, both career-best times.
Williams posted the sixth-best time in the league in the men's 100-meter dash, clocking in at personal-best time of 10.73 seconds at the VertKlasse Meeting.
Cailen Blaire had two top-ten rankings for the year at sixth in the women's hammer throw at 49.56 meters at the Mountaineer Open and ninth in the discus throw at 38.65 meters at the Mountaineer Open, both personal-best marks.
Ross Lucia ranked fourth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 51.07 meters at the VertKlasse Meeting, eighth in the shot put with a mark of 14.06 meters at the Charlotte Invitational, and ninth in the discus throw at 40.29 meters at the Charlotte Invitational, all personal records.
GWU had a pair of top-ten marks for the season in the women's pole vault, as Karin Sastre ranked third overall with a career-best mark of 3.70 meters at the Duke Invitational, and Sarah Coleman had her personal best mark of 3.50 meters at the Charlotte Invitational, ranking seventh.
Kenny VanVorst also ranked in the top-ten in the men's discus throw with a career-best mark of 54.82 meters at the Charlotte Invitational.
Austin Evans had the ninth-fastest time of the year in the 110-meter hurdles, timing in at a career best 15.69 seconds at the Winthrop Invitational.
Taylor Hotchkiss ranked ninth in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.91 seconds in the prelims at the Winthrop Invitational, and also had the fifth best heptathlon with 4,104 points at the Bill Webb Combined Events Classic.
Ashleigh Cleveland also ranked in the top-ten in the heptathlon with the sixth most points at 3,850 at the Bill Webb Combined Events Classic, both being personal bests.
Diviana Forrest ranked tenth for the season in the 400-meter run, clocking in with a personal best time of 58.40 seconds at the Duke Invitational.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Patrick Sastre, Chase Thornhill, Josh Parks, and Carlos Williams had the fourth-best time of 3:21.99 at the Charlotte Invitational.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Kira Ramsey, Karin Sastre, Maya Mallory, and Diviana Forrest had the fifth-best time in the Big South for the year, timing in at 49.06 seconds at the Duke Invitational.
The women's 4x400 meter team of Diviana Forrest, Hannah Sparacio, Taylor Hotchkiss, and Ashleigh Cleveland had the Big South's seventh-best time at 4:10.59, set at the Duke Invitational.
The 2018 Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place Wednesday, May through Friday, May 11 at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University in High Point, N.C.
Action begins Wednesday morning at 10:00 am with the women's discus throw, and will conclude Friday evening with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 8:25 pm.
