BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb women's basketball head coach Alex Simmons announced several staff additions on Friday, finalizing her coaching staff heading into the 2018-19 season.
Joining the Runnin' Bulldogs are former Ole Miss assistant Garner Small, former University of Texas-Tyler assistant Chynna Turner, and former Norfolk State assistant Danielle Bell.
"When putting together our staff, I hoped to bring together a group of people who were passionate about life and basketball and I think that was accomplished," said Simmons. "Garner, Chynna, and Danielle are all three people who are eager to grow the game of basketball and our student-athletes. I am fortunate to have them join the Bulldog family!"
Small arrives in Boiling Springs after spending the 2017-18 season as the Coordinator of Video Services at Ole Miss, where he worked on the same staff as Simmons. Small was heavily involved in scouting throughout his time at Ole Miss, which included wins against top-25 opponents.
Prior to that, Small spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach at Clarendon College in Texas and also served as a graduate assistant and video coordinator at the University of Tennessee-Martin and his alma mater, Olivet College.
Small started his playing career at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, before finishing at Olivet College, where he averaged 15.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Turner joins the GWU staff after spending the past three seasons on the sidelines at the University of Texas-Tyler, where she helped lead the team to an impressive 67-18 record during that span, including a 30-2 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite 8 in 2015-16.
Prior to that, Turner was a graduate assistant for two seasons at Ole Miss, where she worked alongside Simmons, helping in numerous areas, including post player development, recruiting and scouting reports.
Turner was a standout forward at Wichita State from 2009-13, where she helped lead the Shockers to their first ever Missouri Valley Conference titles, as well as the program's first win in the WNIT Tournament and also ranks in the top-25 in the Wichita State record books in games played (130-2nd), points scored (974-22nd), and field-goal percentage (.449-23rd).
Bell comes to Gardner-Web after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Norfolk State, where she helped lead a team that won just three games the season prior to her arrival to records of .500 or better each year, including an 18-11 record in 2017-18, the Spartans first winning season in 16 years.
Prior to that, Bell was the Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Richmond for three seasons and at Auburn University for one season. She also spent a pair of seasons as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Georgia, with the Bulldogs making NCAA tournament appearances in both seasons, including a Sweet 16 trip in 2011.
Bell played collegiately at Richmond, leading the Spiders to a pair of 20-win seasons and two postseason appearances, finishing her career with 801 total points and ranking seventh all-time in program history with 133 made three-point baskets.
