Jada Newton Named Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After scoring two goals in her first two collegiate matches, forward Jada Newton was named the Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week.
"Jada had an outstanding opening weekend," said fifth-year head coach Mike Varga. "She has been eager to learn our system and has done everything we've asked her to do. I look at any accolades that we receive as team accomplishments, and this is no different. We were able to find Jada in dangerous areas of the field, and she did what we needed her to do and put the ball in the back of the net."
Newton (Woodbridge, Va. / Osborn Park HS) scored the equalizer in the season opener against defending SOCON champion UNCG by receiving a cross in the box from teammate Stina Kleppe and chipping a shot past the Spartans' keeper.
Her goal came less than 10 minutes after UNCG took a 1-0 lead, but unfortunately for Gardner-Webb, it would not be enough as the Spartans were victorious, 2-1.
In Sunday's home opener against Alabama State, Newton gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a two-goal lead with her goal in the 75th minute.
With Gardner-Webb holding a 2-1 lead over the Hornets, Newton received a pass from fellow freshman Gabby Berkes. After making a move through a pair of Alabama State defenders, her shot found the back of the net and put the 'Dogs in front, 3-1.
Newton has started both of the Runnin' Bulldogs' matches this season and played 127 minutes. She leads the team in goals (2), points (4), shots (7) and shots on goal (3). Last week, she was the only Big South Conference freshman to score multiple goals in the opening weekend of action.
Newton and teammates will play three consecutive home matches over the next two weeks. This week, the 'Dogs will take on Davidson on Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m., and will host Georgia Southern on Sunday, August 26 at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN .
