CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coming off an 18-point performance in a win over Wofford last Thursday, Lauren Bevis was named the Big South Conference's Freshman of the Week the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Bevis (High Point, N.C. / Homeschooled) is the eighth women's basketball player from Gardner-Webb to earn Freshman of the Week honors from the Big South office since Gardner-Webb joined the league.Â
Bevis led the Runnin' Bulldogs to their first regular season win on Thursday, November 14, a 67-53 defeat of the Wofford Terriers. She poured in a team-high 18 points with half coming at the charity stripe. The High Point, N.C. native missed just one of her 10 free throws and connected of 3-of-4 three-pointers for her career-high. She also pulled down five rebounds in the victory while playing just 13 minutes off the bench.
Bevis scored her first points off a pair of free throws with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter. Her free throws extended Gardner-Webb's lead to nine. Later in the quarter she hit her first three-pointer of the night to put the Runnin' Bulldogs in front by double digits for the first time.
She scored five points in the third period, accounting for all five of the 'Dogs points in a 5-2 run that lasted just 23 seconds. She drained a three-pointer and was followed after a Wofford layup. At the line, she connected on both free throws, which put her team by up 10 points, 43-33, at the time.
Eight of Bevis' 18 points came in the final quarter. She entered with 5:51 left in the game and after missing her first attempt of the quarter, she made her third and final three-pointer of the night with 2:04 remaining.
In the final 39 seconds, she went to the free throw three times and made 5-of-6 attempts, bringing her points total to 18 in the win.
The High Point, N.C. native joined the Runnin' Bulldogs for the 2019-20 season after being homeschooled and playing for the Forsyth Home Educators and Rodney Rivers and JT Grimes. She played in 116 career games over four years and averaged 24.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 4.2 steals per game. She was the Forsyth Home Educators Player of the Year as a junior and was the 2017-2018 North Carolina High School girls points per game leader. She played AAU basketball for the Winston Salem Stealers. Â
The Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the road for the second time this season when they travel to Appalachian State on Friday, November 22 for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
