September 15, 2019 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs returned to Greene-Harbison Stadium on Sunday evening and suffered a 6-0 setback to the UNC Greensboro Spartans.
Gardner-Webb (0-7-1) managed 10 shots on the night, but none were on target. The 'Dogs did not earn any corners. In contrast, the Spartans took 21 shots – with 11 coming in the first half and 10 in the final period. Slightly less than 75 percent (15-of-21) of UNCG's shots were on goal, and they earned five corners, scoring off the fourth one.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took two shots in the first 12 minutes, and Paula Suarez Is made an impressive diving stop in goal, but the Spartans got on the board in the 17th minute and again in the 21st minute to take an early 2-0 lead.
Stina Kleppe was the only Gardner-Webb player to record multiple shots. She took three in the contest, including one in the 20th minute that was just wide of the net.
Kleppe and Jada Newton both sent shots wide of the net with less than eight minutes remaining, and UNCG extended its lead to three goals with 37 seconds remaining in the half.
Suarez Is made three stops in goal in the first half, and Katelyn Kellogg entered the net to begin the second half.
The Spartans' (1-5-1) Kayla Campbell scored her team's fourth goal just seven minutes into the half, and for the nearly 30 minutes following that goal, the Gardner-Webb back line was able to keep the ball away from UNCG's attacking third and limit the Spartans' attempts.
Ty Snell and freshman Moryah Snype each had an attempt midway through the second half, and they came in a 10-minute span, but neither player was able to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the scoreboard.
UNCG's Julia Brown scored the Spartans' fifth goal in the 79th minute and the Spartans added their sixth and final score with 3:07 to play.
Despite the defeat, Suarez Is and Kellogg combined to make nine saves on the night. Kellogg was credited with 5-of-9 stops, and made an impressive leap to save a ball from going into the net after it hit the crossbar at the 85-minute mark.
UNCG's Abby Bucholz played 72 minutes and earned the win. Kelly Mitchell entered in relief of Bucholz late in the final half. Neither player made a save as the Runnin' Bulldogs failed to record a shot on goal.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Friday, September 20 when it hosts the South Carolina State Bulldogs for its second consecutive match in Greene-Harbison Stadium.
