SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford got off to a very fast start offensively Saturday evening and rolled to a 49-10 win over Gardner-Webb in Gibbs Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (1-3) had no answer for the Terriers (1-2) defensively, with Wofford rushing for 490 yards – an average of 10.0 yards per carry – and 575 total offensive yards.
Gardner-Webb managed just nine yards on the ground itself on 34 attempts, giving up four or more sacks for the third time in four games.
Wofford wasted little time taking control.
Quarterback Joe Newman took off for a 46-yard gain into the GWU red zone just five plays into the game and Blake Morgan capped the drive with a short touchdown run. Jacquez Allen followed with a 46-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead with 48 seconds left in the opening quarter and the home team didn't look back.
Wofford went to the air for another quick score, with Newman connecting with a wide open T.J. Luther for a 62-yard score with 13:22 left before halftime.
Gardner-Webb went to its bench to ignite a sluggish offensive effort and reserve quarterback
Kalen Whitlow came on to provide life for the second week in a row. He found
Devron Harper for a 32-yard gain to the Wofford 30-yard line, but the drive stalled after a sack and the 'Dogs had to punt again.
Darien Reynolds gave GWU life on Wofford's next possession, recovering a fumble at his own 42-yard line. Whitlow then hit
Izaiah Gathings for a 26-yard gain and dumped off a pass to
Jayln Cagle for another first down deep into Wofford territory. The drive stalled at the Wofford 11 after another sack and
Kurt Everett put the 'Dogs on the board with a 32-yard field goal with 4:18 to play before the half.
The Terrier's option game churned out another scoring drive, however, with D'mauriae VanCleave rushing for 19 yards and then a four-yard touchdown with one minute to go in the half.
The 28-3 score remained though the third quarter, but Wofford had more in store. Newman had a 54-yard sprint late in the third quarter, and started the fourth quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run for a 35-3 edge.
Nathan Walker sprinted 56 yards midway through the final quarter to set up another score, and Morgan capped the drive one play later from four yards out for a 42-3 advantage (10:39).
After a botched punt by the Runnin' Bulldogs at their own 10-yard line, Wofford took over and Peyton Derrick scored on the next play on a quarterback keeper for a 49-3 score.
Gardner-Webb appeared to have its first touchdown on the ensuing kickoff, as Harper broke loose for the end zone, but the freshman was flagged for high stepping at the three-yard line and the score was negated.
The eventual 88-yard return did pay dividends, as
Jordan Smith found
James Ellis II on third down in the corner of the end zone for Gardner-Webb's first passing touchdown of the season. The extra point made the score 49-10 with 6:41 to play in the game.
Gardner-Webb finished with 246 yards offensively, with Whitlow completing 13-of-21 passes for a career-best 201 yards. Smith was 6-of-11 for 36 yards and a touchdown.
Awanna had five catches for 60 yards to pace the receiving corps and Cagle added 49 yards through the air to go with 41 rushing yards. Harper caught three balls for 64 yards and had 235 kickoff return yards on eight chances.
Reynolds,
Quinton Jones and
Kobe Rodgers each had six total tackles to pace Gardner-Webb defensively.
Wofford carried 49 times for its 489 yards and completed 5-of-8 passes for 86 yards. Newman finished the night with 155 yards on 11 carries and completed 3-of-5 passes for 67 yards and a score. Three other Wofford backs had at least 65 yards on the ground in a balanced effort.
The Terriers got eight tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss from linebacker Jireh Wilson to pace a solid defense.
Wofford travels to VMI next weekend. Gardner-Webb has an open date, before heading back on the road to play at Western Carolina on Saturday, October 5 (3:30 pm).
