Paula Suarez Is Named Big South Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the first time in 2019, the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team had a player honored with a weekly award from the Big South Conference as goalkeeper Paula Suarez Is was named Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Suarez Is (Oviedo, Spain / Ies La Correderia) started both Big South Conference matches for the Runnin' Bulldogs last week and helped the team start league play 2-0-0 with wins over Winthrop and Hampton, both inside in Greene-Harbison Stadium.
"Paula came up big when we needed her," said head coach Mike Varga. "Our goalkeepers work hard every day to make themselves and the team better, and it is to see nice Paula get recognized for her start to the Big South season."
Against the Eagles, she played the full 90 minutes in goal and made six stops, which was one short of her career-high of seven against Western Carolina (Aug. 25). She was challenged early by Winthrop and made her first save just 3:45 into the match.
Suarez Is' saves were split evenly with three coming in each half. She kept the Eagles scoreless for more than 73 minutes and surrendered just one goal as she picked up the win.
On Saturday afternoon against the Hampton Pirates, Suarez Is recorded her first career shutout as Gardner-Webb earned a 1-0 victory to start conference play undefeated. She made five saves in the net, including one with less than two minutes to play that prevented Hampton from netting the equalizer.
The Oviedo, Spain native has been the goalkeeper of record in each of Gardner-Webb's three victories this season. She earned her first win on September 20 against the South Carolina State Bulldogs before adding a pair of conference wins to her stats last week.
To date, she has appeared in eight matches with seven starts. In the past three matches, she has allowed just three total goals, bringing her goals against average to 1.97 and her save percentage to .704.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will continue their quest Big South regular season title with a pair of road matches to begin October. On Tuesday, October 1, the 'Dogs will travel to Buies Creek, N.C. for a 7 p.m. match with the Campbell Fighting Camels before making the drive to Charleston Southern for a 2 p.m. contest on the afternoon of Saturday, October 5.
