MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball team dropped a pair of hard-fought matches Friday, falling in three sets in the morning to host Memphis before dropping a four-set decision to UT Martin in the afternoon at the 2019 Tiger Brawl.
Gardner-Webb (0-5) lost the morning matchup to Memphis by scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-14. In the afternoon bout, UT Martin took the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-18 before GWU would bounce back to claim set four, 25-20. UT Martin took the fourth set, 25-17, to seal the overall match win.
In the day's first matchup, the Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 15 kills on 65 swings for a .031 hitting percentage, while the Tigers totaled 38 kills on 91 attempts for a .231 hitting percentage.
Delaney McCullough and
Alexandria Roycraft led the 'Dogs on the attack with three kills each, while
Abbey Sprinkle led the team in assists with seven.
Ashley Downer had a team-best 10 digs, while
Hannah Donaldson totaled three blocks to lead that effort.
The Memphis attack was led by Hannah Flowers and Meredith Wallace, who each had eight smashes. Sabrina Bianco dished out a match-high 25 assists.
Mia Migliore led the Tigers with 12 digs and Sabria Cooper had team-best two total blocks.
In the nightcap, the Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 36 kills on 119 attempts, attacking at a .076 clip. UT Martin tallied 41 kills on 125 swings for a .152 hitting percentage.
Elizabeth Griffith led the GWU attack with 11 kills on 25 attempts. Lauryn Roccassin provided a match-high 30 assists.
Charissa Coleman led the squad in digs with 15, while Roycraft had a team-high five total blocks.
For UT Martin, Gintar Mackeviciute and Hannah Phillips each had a team-high eight kills, with Kenzie Hinshaw leading her team with 27 assists.
Jamie Rys totaled 18 digs, while Justine Walker had a team-best five total blocks.
Gardner-Webb returns to action tomorrow at 11:00 am, facing Arkansas-Pine Bluff to wrap up the 2019 Tiger Brawl.
