Gardner-Webb Baseball Announces Staff Additions For 2022 Season

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb baseball announced staff and support staff additions in advance of the 2022 season.

The Diamond 'Dogs welcomed former GWU standouts Cam Pearcey and Patrick Ferguson to the staff, with Pearcey coming on board as Assistant Player Development and Developmental Team Assistant Coach and Ferguson joining the staff as Director of Baseball Operations and Developmental Team Assistant Coach.

Head coach Jim Chester also welcomed Justin Sizemore as an assistant coach (catchers), Max Weir as Head Developmental Team Coach and Aidan Wirshing as Director of Player Development and Developmental Team Assistant Coach. Dylan Horne will also move into the role of Baseball Sports Performance contact.

Pearcey played two seasons at Gardner-Webb after transferring from Coastal Carolina – where he won a national championship as a freshman. Pearcey batted .336 with eight home runs and 17 stolen bases last season, while also fielding at a strong .988 clip. He scored 29 runs and drove in 30 runs in 36 games played.

He was named first-team All-Big South Conference for his efforts in 2021.

Ferguson also earned first-team All-Big South honors in 2021 after batting .299 with a team-high 15 home runs and 51 RBI in 46 games played. The Kent State transfer scored 38 runs, slugged .650 and posted a strong .415 on base percentage.

Sizemore joins the program after spending eight seasons as an assistant coach at Division II Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, Fla. He also has experience on the coaching staff in the South Florida Collegiate League and on the youth travel circuit.

Weir joined the Gardner-Webb family after serving as an assistant at American International College in Springfield, Mass. He also has experience on the training and travel baseball circuit – and served as U.S. Baseball Academy Site Director in Louisville, Ky., in 2018 and 2019.

Wirshing spent one season as an assistant coach and Director of Analytics at Santa Barbara City College in California. He served as an assistant coach with the Waterloo Bucks and was a manager for the UC Santa Barbara baseball squad as an undergraduate.

Gardner-Webb is in the midst of its fall practice season and will get the 2022 campaign underway on February 18 against NJIT on the opening day of the 2022 Jerry Bryson Classic in Boiling Springs.
