Tanzer And Turlington Lead Women’s Soccer to 3-0 Win Over USC Upstate
October 20, 2021 | Women's Soccer
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took on USC Upstate on the road at County University Stadium on Wednesday. The 'Dogs topped the Spartans in a 3-0 shutout win.
"I was not happy with our first half and the team knew that," said head coach Mike Varga. "I challenged them at the half to put in the work needed to win a game on the road and what a response they gave. Our attack was energized after the half and our wide play was exceptional.
Alisha provided a couple great balls that Livi calmly finished and then Maddie capped it off by creating the penalty and then finishing. We had some great fan support also and that helped us a lot as well so big thanks to the Gardner-Webb Army for showing up for us tonight."
Gardner-Webb opened up the scoring just one minute into the second half, as freshman Livi Tanzer netted back-to-back goals. This marks Tanzers sixth and seventh career goals for the Red and Black.
Senior Maddie Turlington secured the win for GWU in the 77th minute of match play, as she found the net off of a penalty kick.
The 'Dogs received a pair of yellow cards in tonight's matchup, Moryah Snype was handed one in the 38th minute and Klara Ovefelt was handed one in the 48th.
Thirty-two total shots were taken tonight, which were split evenly on both sides of the ball. Snype led with four shots, followed by Turlington with three.
GWU paced the match in fouls by collecting 14 total, USC Upstate having half as many.
Helping to earn the shutout for Gardner-Webb, Goalkeeper Katelyn Kellogg had three monster saves throughout the night.
The 'Dogs will be back in action on Saturday, October 23rd, as they take on Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C. for their final regular season match. The game is slated to start at 7 pm.
