Women’s Soccer Falls To Longwood In First-Round Of Big South Soccer Championship, 2-0
October 30, 2021 | Women's Soccer
FARMVILLE, Va. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team faced off against Longwood University in the first-round of the 2021 Big South Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday night. The Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the Lancers with a final score of 2-0.
"I'm really proud of our team," said head coach Mike Varga. "We battled through a difficult season with some heartbreaking losses and showed a lot of resiliency. Tonight we went down and kept playing hard. I felt like we gained the momentum in the second half and we were inches away from an equalizer on a couple occasions but it wasn't our night. Thank you to the seniors who have helped take the program to new heights. They will be missed. We will continue to work hard and represent Gardner-Webb as best we can and we will be back."
Longwood's two goals of the evening came at the 3:34 and 80:26 marks. Madison Lockamy scored the first goal of an assist from Kiersten Yuhas, while Julia Gill scored the second goal of the night off of a touch from Lockamy.
The Lancers paced the night in shots by taking 16 total, the Runnin' Bulldogs took seven. Big South Offensive Player of the Year Maddie Turlington led the 'Dogs with three shots and one on goal, Klara Ovefelt took a pair of shots, while Alisha Holcombe and Livi Tanzer each took one.
Longwood had 10 corner kick opportunities, while Gardner-Webb had four less.
Twelve total fouls were taken throughout the match, which were split evenly on both sides of the ball.
